Generally when you remove the caliper assembly the rotor slides over the hub assembly. Since I have not done a brake job on this particular model, it may possibly be held in place by the hub nut. Remove the caliper assembly first in order to be sure. I could only find two diagrams for the brake assembly for the E320, neither one had the size of the nut or allan bolt. The easiest way to get the size is to measure from one flat area directly across to the other flat area this will give you the size for the socket and allan wrench needed. If in the US, keep in mind that this is in a metric measurement, so it will calculate to millimeters, which makes it much easier to measure than the American standard. Also, if you do have to remove the hub nuts, they will not have to be replaced unless you scar the threads or round the corners.

SOURCE: Replacing the rear rotors on a 2003 E320

So this is what it takes to replace rear brake rotors on a 2003 Mercedes E320;
1) open the bonnet (hood) of the car and loosen/remove the cap off of the brake fluid resevior.
2) remove outer spring clamp from brake assembly (it clips in to the iner edge of the holes of the caliper).
3)using a 7 MM allen wrench, remove the brake caliper.
4) using 18 MM box wrench, remove the caliper housing assembly off of the wheel hub.
5) using a star wrench, unscrew the rotor locking screw from the rotor
6) squirt some liquid wrench on the rotor hub and knock the rotor with a hammer to work the liquid wrench in.
7) using the same hammer, knock the rotor off the hub.
8) using a metal file, lightly file old residue off of the hub and place the new rotor on the hub.
9) set the hub by screwing in the lug nuts and then screw in the hub locking screw using the star wrench, then remove the lug nuts.
10) reinstall the caliper housing assembly onto the wheel hub using the 18 MM box wrench.
11) push back the brake claiper piston to its home position and install the inner brake pad (the one with the snap clips)
12) insert the outer brake pad in the claper housing assembly.
13) slide on the caliper housing with the inner brake pad in place (over the outer brake pad) and screw in the caliper screw rods using the 7 MM allen wrench
14) on the right wheel brakes, DO NOT FORGET to slide in the brake sensor (the one with the black connector) and connect it to the connector on the caliper housing.
15) be sure to reinsert the spring clamp onto the outer brake assembly to set the assembly squarely onto the wheel (there should be no wiggle in the brake assembly after the spring clamps are installed).
16) finally mount the wheels.
17) you can bleed the brakes at this point to release any trapped air (which is unlikely) but be sure to pump the brakes after starting the car BUT BEFORE MOVING IT to re-preassurize the brake system before driving the car.
17) ONE WEEK LATER - recheck brake assembly to ensure all is okay and brake fluid.

This proposed solution is for a 2003 Mercedes Benz E320 and NOT a 2005 model as stated by the limited option selection provided by FIXYA.com when initially describing the problem.

try going to the site below here as well as reading this, it's really helpful and informative, it's a nice step by step. braking systems, when it comes to changing the brake pads hasn't really changed much with modern technology, just remember to used the proper tools to compress all the pistons equally, and also if your pistons have that cross going over the top of them then you have to use a pair of needle nosed pliers to turn the piston counterclockwise this will compress the piston.....hope this and the site are helpful....good luck and happy wrench turning!

You dont have to disconnect the ABS system to replace brake pads on your vehicle, definatly. Dont forget to pump brake pressure up once your finished

SOURCE: cannot remove rear rotor

you can also spray a good amount of W-4 or any kind of rust solvent where the disc sits on the hub. Let it stay for a while make sure it is soaked, make sure the car is in Neutral not in park!! What you would want to do then is hammer with a 4LBS plastic mallet from the inside out of the rotor by rotating it in three to four different positions. Repeat this process a couple of times and it will come off. Make sure there is no locking washer on the wheel bolts, if so you will have to cut them off. Trust me i just changed mine two weeks ago and it worked fine!

no. As long as they are not locked on. They sit inside rotor and when you apply the brake the shoes for your e break push out to drag against inside of rotor. So the short answert is no you do not have to mess with them to replace disc brakes and rotors.

Changed the rear rotors and brake pads and there is a grinding noise


Here is what I have found out. I have an 2008 Toyota Tundra 5.7 4x4, and I changed the rear brakes and rotors. No noise prior to service. After installing new rotors, I started getting a metal scraping noise. After $300.00 in diagnostics, I found that the new rotors are rubbing the against the brake shield. The inner lip of the rotor needs to be machined down to avoid this rubbing. See toyota tundra forum.com for pics.

I have a 230E Mercedes benz 1987 with an engine 1985 230E the car vibrates violently when stopping on (d)rive gear weak torque on the first gear.


The heavy vibration during braking sounds like it is warped disc rotors. This car has disc brakes on all wheels, so it could be one or all of them causing the problem. One way to identify whether it is the front or the rear is to observe the steering wheel while braking and feeling the vibrations. If the steering wheel is shimmying at the same frequency as the vibration, it is almost certain that it is the front. If not it is the rear. Do a visual inspection of your pads and rotors. You will probably see scoring in the rotors. It is a fairly easy do-it-yourself job with improved braking and that smooth Mercedes ride we all love.

Removal of drive shaft


It will cost more money for the special removal and instllation toll than the job itself. It is apercision bearing and it requires a special tool-remove the drive axle,brake rotor,caliper and e-brake shoes. remove snapring and **** bearing out of hub with tool.

CHANGING REAR BRAKE


For rear pads rear rotors changing procedure you need lift up car,secure front wheels, disconect rear wheels from rotors,(if you missing the bolts try drill it whith portable electric drill at first smal drill 3 mm diameter,then 10 mm diameter.)Disconect the hydraulics breake cylinders cearefully putt it on plate not tears the house.Change beake pads.Unscrew the rotor whith hexagonal wrench.Setup the hand bracke clearance.Putt agan the rotor on rear axis.Assembly the breake cylinders ,and wheel tighening 110 Hm.

HOW TO CHANGE THE REAR BRAKE FOR BENZ ML320 2001?


The rear brakes are very easy to change. There is nothing to worry about due to it being a 4-wheel vehicle and you only need to change the rotors if they are at minimum specs(printed on the rotor itself). If you don't have a micrometer to check the rotor thickness, then look at the edge of the rotor for a lip. A tall lip on the edge indicates it is best to change the rotors. Also, if the mileage is over 60k miles or you live in a cold climate(where there is a lot of sand/salt on the roads), it's a good idea to double check your parking brakes. But be careful when removing the rotors, they can hang up on the parking brake pad and potentially pull the pad loose. If the rotors are frozen on, use a lubricant like wd-40 on the center of the rotor and let it soak in, then tap around the outside edge of the rotor/hub area with a hammer to break it free.
