Question about 1998 Buick Regal
Clunking sound under the hood when I start the car. The noise goes off as soon as I turn on the AC. What could it be?
Could be a bad clutch in the ac pump, try sprayin some wd-40 on the clutch with the ac turned on, this would only be a temp fix if the thump goes away, but will let u know if its the ac clutch

The groaning noise is the power steer pump operating under duress. I would suggest having the front suspension checked for any seized or failing ball joints or control arm problems. Most suspension guys will give the undercarriage a look over for you for free to check for any failing/unsafe parts. The engine belt driving the power steer pump should also be checked in case it needs adjustment.

I would change the oil and filter, including proper weight oil. Then I would test again after sitting overnight. Maybe you'll be fortunate and it was due to an overdue oil change. If it still persists, there might be a problem with a hydraulic lifter draining overnight

Wheel bearing. Ive had to replace my front passenger wheel bearing at 75000 miles when a clunking noise came about. another problem it might be is a tire rod malfunction.
