A easy way to check and see would be to lift the truck up off of the tires and see which position the hubs are in when the front tires spin.

Look on the lid on the back of the fusebox. There is usually a map of some kind with code words. Look for letters that best spell "turn signal" in short lettering.

SOURCE: frt lock out hubs inop

A snap ring holds the lock assembly. Get a set of snap ring pliers to help remove them. Then remove the caliper and disc , There should be 4 bolts on the back to remove. Then it should just comes right off.. Be careful it is quite heavy. Check for an ABS sensor wire if equipped. And vacuum hoses on hub .

If the light comes on and you feel the transfer case lock in then it might be a vaccuum line going to the steering knuckle. The hubs are locked in by vaccuum. Try locking the hubs in manually and see if there is any problem. If it works ok then there is a vaccuum problem. If not then there is either an electrical problem(if there is a switch for 4X4) or transfercase problem.

My 7.3 liter will not shift on the fly into 4X4 low. I can manually lock the hubs, the left manual hub is very hard to turn, and can't tell if it is in high or low as there are no marking on the hubs and...

hub locks are worn out, especially if you cant turn them. And its not high and low. Its either auto?lock for switch style shift, or free /lock for old style floor shift. also hub seals could be worn or vacuum system not working.

What do I do with my manual hubs

Here is an easy way to tell if and when they are not engaged. Look on the inside of the axle knuckle where you see the the axle come out of the axle tube. Reach in and turn the axle. If the axle turns your hub on that side is not engaged. Mark the position on the hub. Then move to the other side and perform the same process and mark the hub. Just use a little dot of fingernail polish to mark the unlocked position on the hub for future reference.
