Question about 1997 GMC Jimmy

I was told that my two middle cylinders are missfiring, why would this be?

There are a few reasons why cylinders can start misfiring.

    1) Lack of spark. This could be attributed to bad cables, bad spark plugs, fouled spark plugs.

    2) O-ring around the piston worn.

Is there any black smoke coming out of the exhaust?

Is your engine sluggish? Does it hesitate when you press down on the gas pedal?

The easiest way to check if you are getting spark on those cylinders that are misfiring is to pull out the spark plug and leave it connected to the spark plug cable, you can do this one by one. There's no fear of harming your vehicle, just ensure nothing falls into the open spark plug hole while you're performing this test. I hope this gives you a starting point.

    Best of Luck!

Chances are the coil that controls those two cylinders is at fault and would be a good starting point

Your rings could be bad in the piston or your cylinder wall is worn.

Missfire on cylinder 8 on bmw 545

move the ignition coil to another cylinder and see if the miss fire moves. If so replace that ignition coil. If the miss fire stays on that cylinder it is more likely the fuel injector. Was their carbon on the spark plugs when you removed them? This is indicative that the fuel injector is gummed up.

Missfire cylinder 8 545

Move the ignition coil to another cylinder and see if the problem moves. If it does it is the ignition coil replace it otherwise it is probably the fuel injector.

Cylinder 2 missfire detected

Get a Compression tester. Its easy to do. Remove the plug and screw this in to the spark plug hole and disable the ignition system by pulling the ECM fuse. Crank the engine for 5 seconds and stop. Check the gauge. It should show 150 psi or close to it. If it shows under that check some of the other cylinders and see if they read the same thing. If they give a better reading then you could have a bent valve, a blown head gasket or broken rings or even a hole in the piston. If your unsure then take it to a shop and have them run a compression test on it for you. And make sure you stay in the shop while they do it and see the reading for yourself.

Zeevert was right about all but one thing. Cylinder two is the rear middle cylinder on a V6 or the second one from the passenger side on a 4 cylinder.
