Question about 1992 Honda Accord

1 Answer

Now the car is surging when I step on the gas, going back & fourth, rpms going up and down, still not shifting correctly. The car is an automatic. I've put over $1000 into a 21 year old car in the past 3 weeks. Is it worth investigating further or should I just give up?

it does this when it's warmed up and trying to go over 30 mph. it's fine under 25mph or so. I just don't know if it's worth wasting any more money on or not because of it's age. should i at least take it to someone to analyze? or will it be expensive and just have it scrapped?

Check your coolant level in the rad and the overflow when the car is cold. Sounds like you are either low on coolant or look to get your iac valve checked and or changed. Iac is idle air control valve

SOURCE: Siphoning gas

No it's not u, there is a vent pipe that rund down along the same space a the fill pipe, I would suggest you undue the fill pipe from the tank if you can, if that won't work remove the back seat cushion and take out the gas tank sending unit, and siphon there

SOURCE: 1989 honda prelude. engine surges. from normal to 2100 rpms

There is a warm up valve on the throttle body(should have 2 small coolant hoses). remove the valve and have someone start the car while you block the port to the valve on the intake. If that clears up the problem you can cut a piece of cardboard to mount in between the valve and intake.should straighten it out.

My car has trouble shifting uphill and in low gears

When a car is going uphill, it has to use more power to get up the hill. Most automatic transmission cars will automatically detect this, and shift into a lower gear to get the car up the hill easier. As you get to the top or let off the gas, the car should than shift into a higher gear to maximize fuel efficiency. What does your transmission seem to do? Not want to go into a lower gear, are the RPMs jumping up and down before it shifts?

You have internal transmission damage I expect the clutches on third and fourth gear are wiped out. Its either that or a solenoid gone bad that holds those clutches pressure get it in a transmission shop soon to avoid whole transmission replacement costs.

Is a Throttle Position Sensor the same thing as a Transmission control Module

The TPS ( THOTTLE POSITION SENSOR) tells the engine computer and trans how far you are pushing the gas pedal. Its mounted on the side of the thottle body. It will make the engine surge if it is failing. Have replaced this part many times for this problem. TCM (TRANS CONTROL MODULE) control trans shifting. The tps is and one of the input sensor for shifting.

Check the PCV valve and vacuum lines for leaks. You also need to check the Vacuum advance as it sounds like it might be sticking a little.
