Oil on the spark plugs/failing cylinder?


The important question is - oil on the top half of the spark plug, or oil on the bottom (fire) end of the spark plug?
Oil on the top end of the plug means that your valve cover gasket is leaking. This is a common problem. BMW valve cover gaskets get hard and shrink and have to be replaced about every 10 years. It is an easy do-it-yourself repair, but it can take a while to dig the old hardened gasket out of the valve cover without scratching it. Just be patient.
If the bottom (fire) end of the plug is wet, either the plug is not firing due to a failed coil or some other electrical problem, or you have bigger problems in that cylinder. A compression test is in order.

2000 v w 2.0 starts fine but goes dead immediately


If the engine cranks and fires, then runs for about 1 to 2 seconds, look for a 'Yellow Car' symbol in the cluster.

This indicates the ECU does not recognize the key transponder and denies a engine run command.

If this is not the case you may have a faulty fuel pump. Fuel pumps fail and just give a short pressure rise before they quit allowing the engine to get enough fuel to fire but not run.

Another problem with these is the oil pump. When the engine fires it runs the oil pump and if the dump in the oil pump is faulty, it builds too much oil pressure and forces the valves off the seats and compression goes away and engine stops.

High Oil Pressure ( Over 90 psi.) overpowers the hydraulic valve adjuster elements to the point they pump up holding valve slightly open.

Only cure is a new oil pump. It lives in the oil pan and is easy to service. Average time to change out would be 2 hours, unless you have a Cabrio, in which case lower shield needs removed adding another 30 minutes to an hour to the job.

Engine was miss firing so took to an auto hobby and they said that the plug in cylinder 7 was covered in oil. What could be some causes of this?


Could be broken piston oil ring(s), bad valve seals... Have them do a compression test. How long since you have changed the plugs??

Oil is dripping underneath the car not a lot and the person says its the oil sensor or switch is this serious


This needs to be repaired ASAP!! If your oil runs low while driving this will damage the entire engine. Also leaking oil is a fire hazard, car may catch fire if the oil gets to the exhaust area!!

I have a 1988 Chevy K2500, V8-350 cu. in with TBI. I have fire, but there is no fire running to the fuel pump. There is a new fuel pump relay installed and the fuse is also good. Truck ran fine, then...


Oil pressure switch puts power to the pump after it is started.

Pumps also tend to loose their ground with age. I often splice in a new ground at the pump to eliminate that problem area.

Td5 seems to be miss firing or firing on four


Probably more likely to be oil in the injector loom. About £35 for the part and an hour or so to replace.
Easy way to check, get the ECU out from under the bonnet by the jack, unplug IIRC the red plug and see if there's oil oozing there. If there is, get some contact cleaner and clean that up, but odds are the upper loom has a failed o-ring. This can be replaced then cleaning the lower loom at the ecu a couple of times a week can clear the rest out negating the need for a engine loom replacement.

Car fires up but wont start


does vehicle turn over ???,put battery on a trickle charge .Now you say it fires but will not run?? forget oil leak and thick oil this isnt the cause of it not starting.if it fires up but will not run then its more likely a fuel pump fault ,but thinking about it does this car have a factory immobiliser ,if it does then open and lock the door three times slowly then try starting the car within 15 secs of final unlocking of the door.

Was low on oil and wouldnt start. put in oil and still wont start. is sitting on a hill


Low on oil will NOT ever prevent an engine from starting - unless it is a small engine with oil shutoff.

Will not start is a fuel or spark problem...
So. start with fuel:
1: level in gas tank
2. fuel pump delivering it to the engine.

If you can get some gas in a squart bottle and spray it into the intake - and have some one crank it... if it fires, then it is gas and troubleshoot 1 and 2 above...
If it will not fire with gas injected directly into the intake, it may be spark.

1. Pull a plug wire and hold it near the gngine block. Have someone crank the engine and check for spark...
If none, look for bad coil, voltage to coil, etc. that circuit..l.

2. If spark at the wire (from 1 above) then assume timing... with out adequate oil, you may have distroyed the timing belt/chain tensioner (it uses oil pressure to stay tight). Check the timing (both ignition and cam). If the belt is gone, nothing will fire.

Best of luck - lots of possibilities here - so I just want to get you started in the right direction (and away from the oil issue) - besides, you said that you added oil - but not too much - since you cannot get a decent oil level check on a hill!!

just off the wall guess here but sounds like oil filter sending unit in the pan these get cloged with old sitting oil use a solution like warner mystery oil in pan with normal oil this will break down old oil after 500 miles replace oil and do it again for 3 + 500 mile oil changes this will help clean out the old oil
also you might have gotten your plug wires wrong in fireing order
