The Car uses an alternator to run electricaldevices in your vehicle while the engine is running. The alternator assemblyhelps the voltage regulator to to maintain the steady voltage. 1)Before buying new alternator ,first of all determine which alternator your car needs.Car models made from 1966 to 1970 have a 1.1 L or 1.2 L engine. Models from 1970 to 1978 have a 1.2 L, 1.4 L or 1.6 L engine. Models from 1979 to 1987 have 1.3 L, 1.6 L or 1.8 L diesel engine. Models 1988 to 1992 options include a 1.3 L, 1.5 L, 1.6 L or 2.0 L diesel engine. Models made from 1993 to 1997 also offer a 1.8 L engine. Models from 1998 to 2005 in the United States were available only with a 1.8 L engine. So before buying for new alternator check out this details. 2)The latest Toyota Corolla 2006 has 1.5 L, 1.8 L or 2.4 L engine. 3)After getting the exact alternator for your Toyota car engine. Follow this instructions to replace the alternator in car. 4)First of all disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. There is a gravel shield blocking the alternator. You will have to remove the gravel shield to access the alternator. The alternator is located under the car. 5)Then you will have to remove the battery terminal wire.to remove the battery terminal wire you will have to remove the electrical connector and loosen the nut on the alternator terminal with a socket wrench. And this will allow you to remove the battery terminal wire. 6)Now you can remove the alternator.to remove the alternator.you will have to remove the drive belt. For that you will have to loosen the two mounting bolts on the alternator with the help of socket wrench and this will help to take the alternator off the vehicle. 7)Now to install the new alternator assembly. You will require the torque wrench to tighten bolt .There are two bolts one is smaller and other is larger.Connect the smaller mounting to 18 foot-lb and the larger mounting to 40 foot-lb. 8)Then carefully connect the electrical harness and battery terminal wire to the alternator and tighten the retaining nut to the alternator terminal with a socket wrench. Install the gravel shield which you removed while removing the old alternator. Reconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. The above instructions will help you to replace your cars alternator. Thanks.Goodluck.
The car should be turned off it should be cool. Then follow this procedure.
Park the car on flat surface.Block the back wheels of the car from getting rolled because the front portion of the car has to be jacked up.But before doing that disconnect the black wire of battery. Its necessary for safety reasons. Then raise the car by placing jack under the cross-member.Then after this the passenger side wheel has to be removed.Once the passenger side wheel is removed you will see the belt.Locate the tensioner to remove the belt. The tensioner is located under the alternator. Loosen the bolt with a socket wrench and this will loosen tension on the belt. Take the belt off the alternator pulley and the air conditioner pulley. Unbolt and remove the tensioner to make proper space to remove the alternator. After that there are few more parts that are to be removed to remove the alternator. So remove the air conditioner ,its fitted by two bolts easily seen.Remove this bolts. No need to remove the ac wires or any ac lines.Just lift the ac unit out and then remove the alternator cable from its back. You will also have to remove a nut bolt holding the wire.So remove that nut also, this will help to loosen the alternator wire. Then carefully wiggle and pull the wiring harness to the voltage regulator at the back of the alternator. Now the alternator can be removed. But its connected to the mounting bracket. The alternator is fitted by 3 bolts on mounting bolts.Once you remove this bolts the alternator can be lifted out from the bottom of the car.--------------
This is the procedure to remove the alternator. But for no problem while fitting the new alternator,i suggest you mark the location of each part with marker so that you dont face any kind of problem while refitting this parts again. You can also take a picture of each part before removing it.so that will help for any kind of alternator problem in future also.Do it slowly ,carefully and at day time ,so this will give you exact access of the parts.---------------Thanks.Helpmech.
To remove the alternator you will need to raise the front of the car and block the rear wheels. Disconnect the negetive wire from the battery. Loosen the upper alternator adjustment boltnut. Remove the right front tire and the accessory drivebelt splash shield. Loosen the alternator lower mounting bolt. Remove the alternator drive belt and disconnect the electrical connectors from the alternator. Remove the upper and lower adjustment bolts and remove alternator. You will have to remove the alternator bracket when you lower the alternator down. Installation is the reverse of removal. Hope this will help you.
Rotate the tensioner and remove the belt from around the alternator pulley
Detach the 2 connectors from the alternator
Slide the boot up to access the battery cable on the rear of the alternator
Remove the nut retaining the battery cable and . . .
. . . remove the battery cable from the post on the rear of the alternator
Remove the three alternator rear mounting bolts
Remove the two front alternator mounting bolts
Remove the alternator from the engine by carefully lifting it up and out of the engine compartment
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Tag and disconnect the wiring connectors from the rear (or side) of the alternator. To disconnect push-on type terminals, depress the lock tab and pull straight off.
On 3.8L and 4.6L engines, rotate the automatic tensioner away from the drive belt and disengage the drive belt from the alternator pulley. Remove the alternator brace.
On 3.8L engines, remove the alternator pivot bolts, top and bottom and remove the alternator.
On 5.0L engines, loosen the alternator pivot bolt and remove the adjusting bolt. Disengage the drive belt from the alternator pulley.
On 3.8L and 5.0L engines, remove the alternator pivot bolt and the alternator. On 4.6L engines, remove the alternator mounting bolts and remove the alternator.
Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. On 4.6L engines, tighten the alternator mounting bolts to 15–22 ft. lbs. (20–30 Nm) and the alternator brace bolts to 70–106 inch lbs. (8–12 Nm). In addition, on 5.0L engines, adjust the drive belt tension
3.0 SOHC. TURN OFF RADIO. THEN DISCONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE.REMOVE AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY.LOOSEN THE TENSIONER PULLEY.REMOVE ALTERNATOR DRIVE BELT .REMOVE ACCELERATOR CABLE.REMOVE.BRAKE BOOSTER VACUUM HOSE.REMOVE EGR VALVE.REMOVE ALTERNATOR ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS. THEN REMOVE MOUNTING BOLTS THEN REMOVE ALTERNATOR. THE 3.0 DOHC DISCONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.REMOVE SURGE TANK.REMOVE AIR DELIVERY HOSES TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE ALTERNATOR .IF YOU HAVE AIR CONDITIONER .REMOVE THE CLAMP .RAISE THE SUCTION HOSE.USE SOMETHING TO HOLD IT OUT OF THE WAY.LOOSEN TENSIONER PULLEY .AND REMOVE THE ALTERNATOR DRIVE BELT .DISCONNECT THE OXYGEN SENSOR CONNECTOR .DISCONNECT THE ALTERNATOR ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS.REMOVE ALTERNATOR BRACKETS AND MOUNTING BOLTS .REMOVE THE BRACKET AND ALTERNATOR AS A ASSEMBLY.SEPARATE THEM ON A WORK TABLE.
Loosen the upper bolt from the top and remove. From the bottom remove the adjuster bolt and remove. You'll have to remove the CV axle and remove the alternator from the bottom of the car. Not a very good design as you may already be aware of.
