I have a 2002 au falcon v8 ute ,automatic. And it seems to surge when i am driving up hills under acceleration?Other than that it runs beautifully.Any idea what it could be?

Depending on the slope of the hill, it could be kicking in and out of overdrive. This is normal to a point. I would take it out of OD if there were a lot of hills to climb. Better for the transmsission.

My car looses power on uphill. have changed air, fuel filter and also replaced spark plugs.

A good tune-up is always a good idea.
Any applicable trouble codes?
If automatic tranny and you take the hill in OD, have you tried taking the hill in drive instead of od to see if it will help?
The year--make--model--engine size is good info to post.

Going up hill, the truck starts to buck its not shifting out of over drive?

I don't know year--make--model? If you shift from od to d, does the problem go away? If so, I agree with you, sounds like a tranny issue.

I used to have a vehicle that did the same thing, Always on the same steep hill. I'd shift into D until I crested the hill then back into od.

I realize my post doesn't help you fix it.

Should i drive my mercury mountaineer in over drive on or off

Depends on what you are doing...

NEVER TOW in OVERDRIVE, you will burn up the Transmisison

Under normal Driving Conditions, leave it in OD (Overdrive), the vehicle will automatically choose the gear for you

If you are driving up and down Hills (Mountains) where it is shifting back and forth a lot, my own personal preference is to take it out of OD until I am going down the hills. I hate the shifting back and forth and prefer to keep the RPM's up in the 2200 -2350 range to maximize the engine....

Od light on

Hi there,

When you press in the Overdrive (OD) switch, this simply allows your gearbox to use the highest gear (when it needs to). For example, if your transmission has 1,2 & D gears, the OD acts as a 4th gear. This is useful on open roads and will help with economy.

If the OD light remains ON, then you have deactivated the 4th gear. This means the car will change up to 3rd gear only, until you depress the OD switch again.

Deactivating the OD is useful, when you wish to "manually" change down to 3rd gear, to climb a hill, or need better acceleration.

Why weneed O/D on transmission if I wanna to off it it must show on panel off?

Overdrive is a very high final drive gear ratio, to save gasoline. But you should turn it off on hills or if you are going too slow. There should be an indicator light telling when it is on, but it should go off automatically if you are not in the highest regular gear, and if you are not going fast enough.

What is better, drive my grand marquis car 1996 with ovd button on or off?

on, you actually will cause damage on the long run to the tranny if kept OD. OD is for ocassions or hills as well as heavy load to tranny performance. keep it off unless need to engine perform better at times

What is the proper way of using overdrive, how and when you have to use it?

If you are not climbing steep hills or towing, leave it on all the time. Turn it off for low speed/high strain driving like towing, climbing and off-roading.

i hope this helps

1995 Grand Cherokee no power especially up hills

You may want to check engine performance. If you have any problem with either the fuel (including filter) or ignition system (including timing chain) the transmission will react to the subsequent lack of power, in order to maximize remaining power... This includes early downshifts.
good luck
