One of two things~ the oil pump is out or the bearings are loose.

It is not pumping engine oil

You need a working oil pump to pump the oil around the engine. If the oil is not being pumped through, the oil pump has failed or there is a blockage in the lubrication system.

Most likely the oil pump has failed and needs to be replaced.

Have a 1993 2wd isuzu truck...from knowedgable friends they think my oil pump is bad...the truck sounds rough; almost like a diesel engine. i cant afford a $100 oil pump to replace and someone told me

To start with, I assume you have a warning light instead of an oil gauge.
You could check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge.
The problem with low oil pressure can be the pump and also bad crank bearings. The bearings can be worn enough to loose most of the oil pressure before the oil gets up to the top of the engine.
The problem with pumping oil up to the top is it needs to be in the passages of the block to get to the crank and cam bearings, not just on the cam itself.
So even replacing the oil pump may not fix the issue.

Seems as no oil is getting to the top of engine

Remove the valve cover, start the engine and find out. If this is the case and the top of the head is not all gummed up with sludge replace the oil pump. It the top of the head is gummed up the inside of the engine must be desludged before you install the new oil pump.

94 Buick PA,225K...My Oil light keeps coming on, and there is a slight tapping in my engine,...what indicators would tell me that there's a major engine problem If I ran a proper diagnostic test on it?

The tapping is going to eventually wear out your camshaft, as the valve lash adjusters are not getting enough oil. The lack of oil may also cause premature wear of engine bearings. At 225K, there is no guarantee a new oil pump will solve the problem, as the bearing clearances may also be affecting the oil pressure. You may be able to extend the life using an oil additive. If you want to keep this car, i would try a new oil pump. If that doesn't fix the problem, you will need a complete engine rebuild. Let us know if you need instructions for replacing the oil pump, and thanks for using FixYa.

My oil light comes on when the car is running at idle but if i press the gas pedal it goes off

You didn't mention year, mileage, engine size... But with that said. Change the pressure sender first, if this isn't the fix change to a high mileage or a heavier weight oil and a different brand oil filter. If these don't get it fixed, the engine is showing age and the oil pump can't compensate for excess bearing wear from the mileage at low RPM. Live with it or get the engine freshened up. $$$!!! Good Luck!

Oil pressure warning lamp flickers when in drive at a stop at idle

2.7 engine I ASSUME??????. A larger inlet for the oil pump is needed. Call the dealer parts dept. about it. This engine had lots of oil sludging and timing chain problems. Fix them before the chain breaks, or its BIG BUCKS to fix. I would recoomend having your mechanic do the oil pump and check the timing chain/ water pump components.

No oil pressure

Make sure that you are using the correct grade of oil for your car and climate.
Oil pressure warning light ON usually indicates a problem with 'low' engine lubricating oil pressure and is a CRITICAL issue that needs to be fixed before you blow your engine.
Some of the causes:
- Wrong oil type for your car and weather
- Low oil level
- loose oil cap or dip stick seal
- Leaking oil gaskets or engine seals (common in old cars)
- Blocked oil filter
- Faulty oil pump or block internal oil pump filter

Replace oil pump

Oil Pump is in the oil pan.. You would have to take the pan out. To get the pan out you either have to raise the motor up or remove crossmembers.
