Question about Volkswagen Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

My 2004 VW Golf 1.4 (carburettor model) sometimes only starts to "stutter" and acts like its running out of file. Upon checking the fuel filter whilst this happened I noticed the fuel were not steadily flowing through, but rather is pumped in small bursts. One I switch off the car, restart it, the problem normally disappears, only to reoccur again a couple of minutes later. This might only happen once every couple of weeks, but is getting progressively more frequent and severe. Any idea what can cause this? Fuel Pump?

Hi Jaco, I was not aware that manufactures produced non fuel injected cars these days. Vehicles with carburettors are fed with low pressure pumps, so observing the fuel pulsing through the fuel line is not unusual. If the vehicle starts and gives problems at idle and or low engine revs I believe the problem could be contaminated fuel. It would not do any harm to replace the fuel filter as a first operation. If performance improves you're half way home. A common fault which can occur with carburetor metered engines is that dirt contaminates the jetting inside the carb, which will mean removing it, stripping, cleaning and reassembling and adjusting it once it is fitted back to the engine. If you need help let me know. Regards John

First, try swapping the eec relay with a known good unit and see if the problem persists.
Second, you could be experiencing a problem with your ignition module overheating, causing high resistance in the circuit. When the vehicle sits for a while, the circuit cools and will allow the current to flow again.

Start with the simple and replace the fuel filter. The fuel filter should be replaced every 15,000 miles or once a year to ensure the fuel system is running 100%. Auto Zone will have the fuel filter and can give you the step by step instructions to getting the job done with common tools. If it's the fuel pump failure, you have not gotten the car restarted. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to know you got your car running 100% again soon and please rate.

Has the fuel tank been low lately? How cold where you are? Add 2 bottles of fuel "Heat" to the gas tank, and be sure to fill up...and keep fuel level above 1/4. Hope this helps.

Check everywhere for air leaks. If it has a carburettor start the car and spray butane gas around it, if the revs increase then you have a leak somewhere as it is sucking in this extra fuel.

I need to know where the fuel pump relay (J17) is for a 2004 mk5 vw golf

You very likely are going to replace the fuel pump, well i recomend you check the vw recalls on failing fuel pumps or related fuel lines and fasteners.
I own a 2004 vw golf and began to leak fuel at the fuel delibery nipples right out of the fuel pump. the problem is that either there tension on the nipple and cause to crak thus leak, or the fuel line is short and pulling toward the rear right tire causing it to crak and leak. the
Volkswagen Golf Recall 05V154000 is the solution
