Question about Dodge Caravan

1 Answer

2000 Grand Caravan, backing up from parking lot and experienced sudden and complete power steering loss. I possibly heard/felt a faint pop before it went. Definitely not the serpentine belt, and not the fluid level in the power steering reservoir. Didn't have any squeaking/squealing noises to indicate that the power steering pump could be going. Is this still likely to be my problem? My father is a retired mechanic so I am hoping he can fix it for me. Be nice to have input to direct him in finding the solution though. thx! Lisa

Hi Lisa, I'm not certain, but it is possible that the power steering has a separate belt. If the fluid level has remained constant and there are no noticeable leakages, a broken belt is the most likely cause. Regards John

I was pulling into parking lot and 2004 gmc envoy started to go into donut spin and then all of a sudden power steering went no leaks or belts are brokenwhat could it be

possibly check your steering components. a broken component would cause such sudden loss of control resulting in a spin out

Loss of power steering.

Might be a slipping serpentine belt. Did you happen to drive through a puddle of water just before this happened?

Could also be your steering rack going bad. This would be more money. Hopefully not. When was the last time you had your power steering fluid drained and replaced?

Loss of steering

Obviously in both cases some part of the steering linkage broke off (steering shaft, pitman arm, idler arm, tie rod or tie rod end... etc... Could be a number of things, depending on the location of the broken part) In the second case (still had steering for 2 days), that was just a streak of luck and the broken part stayed in place just enough one way or another for a few more days.

Loss of steering

Sounds like you broke a tie rod end, or a steering linkage connection.

Do you see anything that connects to the wheels hanging down?
Open the hood, and look at where the steering column shaft goes down. Can you see it turn? (this will take to people to see)
If that shaft turns, where it connects to the wheels, look at the tie rod (the long rod that connects to both front wheels), do you see it move?
