Hi Devon, It would help us to help you, if you tell us which make of vehicle, the model, the year of manufacture and the fuel the vehicle runs on. (diesel or petrol) The engine type would also be good to know. Regards John

SOURCE: car began to lose power while on freeway then stopped

Sounds like the alternator is going bad and killing the battery.

SOURCE: 1997 dodge 3.5 fast idle can not slow it down

Sounds like a vaccuum, or gasket leak. Easiest way to diagnose is to get a can of starting fluid and spay it around any vacuum hoses and intake area while it's running. Be careful! Starting fluid is extremely flammable!

If you notice an acceleration, or de-celeration while spraying the starting fluid, you should be able to pinpoint the leak.

Your noise sounds like it is power train related,If you have eliminated the engine,Since it doesn't make the noise while moving and in neutral.
It sounds like a universal joint in the drive shaft.Do you notice a vibration
along with the noise?

SOURCE: Hesitation when cold, no power, sometimes runs

you have a misfire occurring is the check engine light on if so you need to do a code retrevial it may tell you which cylinder is misfiring or it may give you a po300 code which just says random cylinder misfire.if this vehicle has not been tuned and has several miles on it you would probably do well with tune up

When you push the gas pedal all the way to the floor, is the engine revving up? Does the transmission engage at all? Have you checked the transmission fluid level? Is it foamy? Do you smell something burning or burnt?

I have a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix. It's an automatic. Just recently it started driving funny. The gears don't shift smoothly. It will do about 35mph and then won't shift. I have to let off the gas and then...

Vehicle shift problems are usaully attributed to a bad shift solenoid or a Vehicle speed sensor on input shaft sensor . On your vehicle pushing the gas pedal all the way to floor put's the computer into clear flood mode shutting off the fuel injectors . With all the electronic sensor's on your vehicle ,anything is possible . Bad MAF sensor , other shorted sensor's too . Hooking up to a professional type scan tool an driving the vehicle is how we find problems like this at the dealer . We can't afford to guess an just replace part's . Without testing all your going to get on here are guesses .

I have a t reg golf auto only done 30k but takes ages to change form second into third .

this is a computer controlled autobox.on a flat road put it into drive and without using the gas pedal let the car accelerate itself to max speed (about 35mph)then stop and do the same with only an inch of gas pedal.stop then gun it,put your foot hard down to the floor until you reach a speed that is just safe for the road conditions.
you have just reset the computer.....if you drive it gently for a few miles, you may feel a difference,if not then get it onto a diagnostic for a health check....

When slowing down the transmission feels as if it is jerking in to the next gear.

after checking fluid level is correct, try this, to see if it improves...
into drive, let car accelerate without any gas(do not touch pedal)to max speed (about 30/35mph).stop,then with 1/3rd gas pedal, accelerate to max speed(do not move foot)stop, then foot hard to floor, upto about 60mph,then stop.then only using a max of 1/3rd gas pedal, drive for about 15miles.you have just reset the drivetrain computer setings....the car is fitted with a computer controlled fuzzy logic gearbox,it will try to make you drive as eco as poss, but if used harshly the gearchange can be harsh up and down.....
if driven gently 4th will engage at 43 mph, with a slight clunk.

Harsh downshift into second gear when decelerating. Is there a software upgrade or would a transmission flush help?

a transmission flush may help, but try this first, without touching the gas,put the car in drive and let it get to top speed(about 30/35mph)STOP, then use 1/3rd gas pedal(do not move your foot)and let it accelerate to about 60/70mph,STOP....then,if safe, floor the gas pedal to about 60/70 mphSTOP.then drive as normal.
the gearbox is computer controlled and if you use kickdown a lot or you change gears yourself then it will be harsh, try only using 1/3rd of the gas pedal(boring)BUT you will see a massive increase in gas mileage/comfort....also check fluid level every 2k.

Turn on the key and within 5 seconds press the gas pedall 3 times to the floor and then watch the change oil soon light blink a few times and it is reset for another term of driving.
