When it shifts from low gear on up it really bangs in. Then when it down shifts from overdrive it acts as if it hasn't completely engauged or its dragging

The only hope you have of saving your transmission is to change the fluid filter in the transmission pan underneath the van. You will also need to add new fluid to the proper level when the filter is changed and the pan re-installed.
DO NOT USE ANYTHING OTHER THAN FACTORY-STYLE FILTER AND DEXRON III FLUID.
DO NOT USE ANY KIND OF LIQUID TRANSMISSION REPAIR UNLESS YOU HAVE 3 GRAND IN YOUR POCKET.
And it still may come to that, most likely will. You have described a dead transmission. If the fluid in the pan smells rank and burned, is dark brown and gritty, or has visible metal shavings in it, the transmission's toast.

Transmission fluid/filter change in 2000 Honda Odyssey

I would not recommend using Dexron III. Honda Odysseys are prone to transmission problems. A drain and fill with Genuine Honda Fluid is Recommended. The drain plug can be removed with a 3/8 ratchet at the bottom of the trans. The fill hole is at the top of the trans. You remove it with a socket on a long extension. The capacity is close to 3 quarts

Transmission problem 98 dodge dakota

just try changing your transmission fluid and filter first, and its not a 5.1 its a 5.2 unless you have the 5.9 r/t then it would be a 5.9. i would change fluid and filter first and go from there... and as far as the extra effort it takes to shift from park, try using the parking brake when you park, set the brake before you put it in park and take your foot off the brake pedal, that stops the truck from resting on the transmission park gear and should solve that particular problem.

4x4 slips shiftin gears starting and stopping

you might already know but when shifting into 4wd you can shift into 4hi while driving as long as the tires,(all four) are travelling the same speed. you can't shift into 4wd if you are spinning. 4 low you have to completely stop. When you are in 4 low as you know the power of vehicle is greatly increased due to gear reduction. so if you are seeing slipping symptoms, you might want to change transmission filter. It might not be much help to you but it might prevent problems down the road. also when changing fluid be sure to put mopar transmission fluid for replacement on jeep. like gm calls for dexron. the transfer case on dodge and jeeps also takes transmission fluid. I had to replace a t-case on my friends dakota that was making a grinding noise and it turns out a seal had leaked some fluid out and burnt up some bearings. pretty expensive. they are chain driven. hope I didnt get too carried away, because I am not a transmission expert but I just wanted to share what I did know with you.

Transmission

Most likely a fluid change and the new Dexron 6 trans fluid will cure this issue, make sure to do a full service, fluid and filter. Note, Dexron VI replaces all previous Dexron fluids and I know from personnel experience it works great, longer trans life and smoother shifts and less problems like yours.
