crank position sensor/camshaft position sensor/throttle position sensor/fuel regulator//airlock.
How far down the system does the fuel flow? If you have have had the vehicle serviced recently have you had the fuel pressure measured ?

you do not say which engine you have or whether it is petrol/gas or diesel or something else. Please add detail and repost the query.

What are the top most common causes for the injectors on a 2001 ford ranger to not fire/mis-fire

1. Fuel (ethanol) clogging
2. Sensor (crankshaft or camshaft) mis-communication...bad sensor or signal to computer
3. Electrical harness (age cracking, corrosion)
4. Fuel filter clogged, not sending proper fuel pressure
5. Fuel pressure too low (fuel pump)

Not necessarily in order...but start with fuel, move to electrical inspection, then sensor...unless you have a CEL code to start with first.

My 1986 ford ranger 2.9 v6 engineafter driving for a while it sputters from gas and stalls.does it have (2) fuel pumps? 1 in the outside frame and 1 in the tank?

Yes there are two (2) fuel pumps on these pickups, one low pressure one in the tank that gets the fuel to the high pressure pump which is in the inside of the drivers frame rail beneath the cab towards the front of the cab.
