Question about 1994 Chevrolet Lumina APV

The fan won't cut off onless I disconnect the battery post

The van was overheating because i had a radiator leak and as soon as i was about to get it fixed. the fan started running constantly. even when i turn the car off

Does it cut off once it cools off let it run and see if it will cut off after it does cool down. Write back

Radiator fans won't come on while van is running


Start the car and turn on the AC to max. Do either of the fans run with the AC compressor engaged? Also, there is a temp sensor for the fan circuit but I don't know exactly where it is located on that vehicle.

My 1999 Chevy Malibu is losing the coolant though the overflow hose by the resevior I've had my head gaskets replaced there is no overheating no water oil mix, but my radiator fans arent working I


Sounds like you need to disconnect the Radiators' electric fans and have them tested. You absolutely must have them working, or your car will overheat. Check to see if the Temperature guage is working.

You need to go to a good autoparts store and have them test the fans and charge and test your battery. You may need some sensors to activate the Radiator fans, but you could be running the battery down with shorted cooling fans.

There are also Relays which work with the Radiator fans. The overflow will stabilize once the water gets into where it belongs. Make sure your Thermostat is not clogged with the sealer.

It could be a leak, check your radiator for any leaks, also check upper and lower radiator hoses, water pump, etc. But you said the fan doesn't kick on even when it's reading "hot". So I would look into that more. route the wires and locate the plug, make sure it's plugged in, or reseat the cable by unplugging, and replugging it back in. You could also unplug the negative cable on the battery terminal for a few seconds in attempt to reset the ECU (computer).

It is possible that the pump failed because of an overheating problem. Make sure the fans run by turning on the air conditioning. They should operate as soon as it is turned on. Bad fans are a common problem. The pump should not have been leaking after replacement though. Make sure you have no leaks first and foremost. Then make sure the fans work. There is also a fan control module located in the area under the battery, but it is difficult to properly diagnose. If the fans do not turn on with the a/c, you can jump the wires at the thermo switch. One should be power, and when you jump to one wire they should go to low speed, the other high.

My van 99 dodge caravan has started overheating. I noticed the radiator fan does not turn on. The fuse is good and I looked for a relay for the fan and found none. Thinking it could be the the fan itself...


One of the simplest ways would be to disconnect connection from fan and use jumper wires from a 12v-14v cordless drill battery, or the vehicle battery to go directly to fan wires connector. If the fan works, the problem is elsewhere, if not, replace fan.

How to change a radiator


1988–91 Models
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Properly drain the cooling system into a suitable container.
  3. Disconnect the fan motor and motor connector.
  4. Disconnect the upper and lower radiator hoses.
  5. Disconnect and plug the automatic transaxle cooling lines at the radiator, if equipped.
  6. Disconnect the coolant reservoir overflow hose.
  7. Remove the radiator attaching bolts and brackets.
  8. Remove the radiator with the cooling fan attached.
  9. Remove the cooling fan and shroud from the radiator. NOTE: Check all cooling system hoses for any signs of damage, leaks or deterioration and replace if necessary. To install:
  10. Attach the cooling fan and shroud to the radiator and install the assembly.
  11. Attach the radiator bolts and brackets. Tighten the radiator bracket bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  12. Connect the coolant reservoir overflow hose.
  13. Connect the automatic transaxle cooling lines to the radiator, if equipped.
  14. Connect the upper and lower radiator hoses.
  15. Connect the fan motor and thermo-switch wire connector.
  16. Refill the system with the proper type and quantity of coolant, check for leaks and bleed the cooling system.

there is a coolant cap on the overflow bottle check it for seal
i'd just replace it
also if you put the new thermostat in backward the overheating would be significant

Overheating


1. start the engine and leave the radiator cap open.
2. put a cardboard cover or a rug in the front of you radiator.
3. let it runs 20 minutes or more, see if it is overheated and see the water or coolant in the radiator circulated or not. If not, as soon as you have already changed water pump. thermostate and check the hoses, no leak, I think your radiator was blocked.
