The output for a normal alternator should be 13.5 volts to 14.5 volts. the heavy lead from the back of the alternator goes to the battery and charges the battery. it could be loose or corroded

My 2000 Focus is using altenators monthly...whats going on?

Are you using quality alternator? Is this rebuilt or new alternator? Make sure the battery has a full charge, don't charge a dead battery with alternator. Check the alternator belt tension. Check wiring circuits for battery and charging system. Check for excessive battery amp draw, with everything off.

At the moment, I question the alternator quality? When finances are tight, I also buys parts from discount auto stores, which may or may not be a good idea?

What could be causing my van to pull so much power

First of all, is alternator charging the battery. Battery voltage when engine is off, should be at least 12.6 or better at battery posts.less than 12.4 with engine off. Battery is going bad. When engine is running at battery should be at least 13.8 to 14.2 or more if alternator is charging. You can go to any auto parts store, and get the charging system checked for free Advanced auto, Auto-zone, ETC, Good-Day! if battery and alternator are good. Heres how to check for a current drain. Disconnect negative terminal from battery, Hook a test light to the negative cable. connect opposite end of test light to battery negative post . wait at least 5 minutes, with test light hooked up. if light is on. Then start pulling fuses in fuse box, when the light goes out. thats the problem circuit.

Battery is new, battery terminal is new but when it starts the battery gage is on low

You are looking at a charging status and not battery level. A low reading tells you that your alternator is not charging your battery. Suggest you take it to an auto parts store and have them check the output of your alternator, to check my diagnosis.

The battery light stayed on after we put a new battery in

The battery light is an indication of a problem in the charging circuit - alternator, rectifier, or maybe the battery. Before installing a battery, a good auto parts store would have checked the charging circuit. Have that done, now.

Main battery does not charge

Hi Sheila,

This sounds like an alternator or a battery issue. The first thing I would do is take the truck to your local auto-parts store who can test the amperage output of the alternator and stored charge of the battery.

Both Advanced Auto and AutoZone provide this service for free, other parts stores may do the same.

From there, you should have a more definitive diagnosis of the problems that you are encountering with the charge.

Possible bad alternator?

Bad alternators straight out of the box are not uncommon. Replace it again and hope you get a good one. Make them test it on the bench before taking it out of the store.
