Question about 1990 Mitsubishi Mighty Max

1 Answer

I can not pass smog. with all tolled I have over $2,000 tied up in my lil truck this year. So I've done all this and my o2 readings are still in the high 6% range. I changed both my o2 and cooling sensor. Next my catylitic converter, then my spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor. I have a new timing belt and water pump waiting to put on, but I have a feeling those things aren't necessary. Today I went to the smog referee and got a one time waiver to allow me two years to get my problem solved or retire it. It's in fantastic shape my hope is to actually fix it and maybe give to my daughter. so is there a way I can fix this problem that someone may know of? My suspicion is that I may have bad injector(s).

That could very well be one of your problems, many things can cause that, but don't guess. Have it professionally diagnosed & if the repair is within your means, go for it. Good Luck

SOURCE: I have a 1997 Mitsubishi Galant with rough idle

I am having the same issue on Mitsubishi Galant 02. Clattering on acceleration, herky jerky idle. Pulled a code multiple cylinder misfire. My mechanic's diagnosis is bad valve cover gasket causing oil to seap into the spark plugs and bad timing belt, which I have not replaced at 150k miles. I do however know my fuel injectors do need cleaning, he hasn't ruled that out either. Have you pulled any code on it? I have read on engine knock sensor going out on some of these also. Hope this helps some.

Not passing smog, no code or engine light

Its going to be tough to find the problem without access to a 4 gas machine. Especially if there are no trouble codes in the computer.
If the fuel mixture is rich it should set a code for one or both O2 sensors. Same thing if the EGR is not working, etc.
One thing that could cause problems is the thermostat not getting the engine up to normal temp.

Won't pass smog, Rich idle.

First, is the check engine light on ?
You should have a code for the O2 sensor showing the exhaust gas is rich.
Could be a faulty injector, fuel pressure regulator, or O2 sensor.
Even a faulty thermostat would do it.

I'm barely failing smog due to high hydrocarbons.

Hi Larry, I your position I believe I would take the vehicle for a diagnostic scan and then check the read outs. There could be a problem with any one of a number of sensors but I believe you'll end up with all odds pointing at the cat. Regards John

Cant pass smog failed nox got 2032,allowed 695 95 bmw 318i

Since your car has no EGR valve, you have one of two problems. You either have a bad O2 sensor, making the car run lean, or you need a new Cat. Or, you've had a bad O2 for so long that it ruined your cat, and now you may have to replace them both. Either way, I'd highly recommend having a smog tech take care of this problem for you, since you have no access to a smog machine that will tell you if the repairs you've done have solved your problem.

Smog obd

It could be the o2 sensor, Try going for a bit of a drive and then getting the emissions test done. When the engine is hot, the test reads better.
