Question about 1983 Toyota Pickup

1 Answer

Fuel gauge & speedometer don't register

Just bought 1983 Toyota pickup; engine runs great. Gas gauge and speedometer don't work. Had fuel float unit rebuilt & mechanic tested it outside & says it works. But won't register on dash. Also had the "chain" replaced but speedometer and odometer still don't work. Could it be an electrical problem? Or problem with the dash instruments.

Toyota 1994 oil engine , when the engine cold oil pressure execellent whenever it gets hot oil pressure drops rapidly

A symptom of a engine that is almost 20 years old perhaps 200k+ miles. Mine does the same thing. I don't know how accurate the dash gauge is ... but I haven't been worrying about it. I run 10w-30 year round. I've had the truck over 8 years and 120k miles ... still runs great and the oil pressure gauge works as you describe since I bought it. Unless you are sure you have serious bearing problems or whatever I'd just drive it.

Gas will not flow easily (sometimes hardly at all) into my 1983 Toyota pickup. Is the line clogged? Is there a seperate connection that allows air to escape during filling which could be clogged?

check your fuel pump pressure and I'm sure you changed your fuel filter. Blow compressed air back through fuel line as it may be something floating in tank. Does flow change when gas cap is off? Is this 20 or 22R motor?

Fuel gauge registers full when filled with gas....drive 20mi and then drops to zero...still gas in the tank

The sender unit in the tank is the most likely cause. To test the panel unit, remove the wire from the fuel tank unit and gound it. The panel gauge needle should move up full scale to hot. Remove the wire from the ground and the gauge should return to empty. If this test is ok, the tank unit needs to be replaced.

The fuel sending unit in the tank is going bad,it is a float, and it is failing,to repair,it must be replaced, removal of the tank is required.

I have an 1983 olds cutlass and the guage cluster is not working properly the oil temp and gas is not readind but the tach speedometer and battery is what could be the problem

Worn out gauges would be the first guess. The next would be the oil pressure sensor....

The gas gauge could have problems from a bad float in the gas tank or the wires to the sending unit are badly deteriorated.

My question is this I have a 1983 toyota pickup truck with the 22R engine.About a week ago I pulled out ot my drive way and when the motor warm up it started to run rough and black soot was coming from my...

black soot is a running rich condition it's getting to much gas not enough air .. 14-1 ratio air to gas your carb rebuild needs to be rechecked for sticking float..

1983 toyota pickup truck runs rough when the motor warms up

It would appear that the Black smoke is unburnt fuel, meaning Spark or timing could also be out. Check you plug and point gaps. If you rebuilt the carby, float level is crucial also check the needle and set to ensure it is shutting off the fuel, if it is not shutting off, it will just flood the engine. Not sure what carby you have but I woud pull out the jets/power valve and replace them. Some carbys have a small ball bearing to control fuel, if that was lost that could be it. Pull up an exploded diagram of the carby and do it again. I know its time consuming, but it will be peace of mind. Good luck
