SOURCE: 2002 jeep grande cherokee check engine light

A common problem on many of the new cars is that when a person gets gas, they don't tighten up the gas cap. This will turn on the check engine light. Did you get gas recently? Another option is to see what code is stored in the ECU that turned the light on. This is done with a scanner tool. If you do not have a scanner, then have a dealer look at it.

SOURCE: overheating engin when at idel, fan not working

does both the hoses get hot bottom and top? this will tell you if theres flow through the radiator. If you have a voltage tester test the wires on the fan connecter check there is current going to the fan if so replace the fan its a common problem as previously stated.
if there is no power to the fan when the vehicle should be turning it on i.e. its hot enough check the fan relay under the hood.

SOURCE: can't locate the cooling fan sensor or relay.

the radiator fan relay is located behind and slightly lower than the r/f way to get to this is by removing right side of front fascia out enough to get behind it. this will give you acsess to the relay.i work at a jeep dealer and have done this many times.

I have 2000 impala.. Code 0481 I've replaced the relay even though both fans turn on fine. I also swapped the plugs to see if I would get a fan 1 code and still got 0481. Any ideas?

DTC P0481Cooling Fan Relay 2 Control Circuit .
You swaped what plugs ? Fan's ? That wouldn't change anything ! You need to know how these duel fan set up's work . With this code the fans will still work in low speed , not high !
Output driver modules (ODMs) are used by the PCM to turn on many of the current-driven devices that are needed to control various engine and transaxle functions. Each ODM is capable of controlling up to 7 separate outputs by applying ground to the device which the PCM is commanding ON. Unlike the quad driver modules (QDMs) used in prior model years, ODMs have the capability of diagnosing each output circuit individually. If an improper voltage level has been detected on ODM B output 2, which controls the high speed, relay 2, and series/parallel cooling fan relays, DTC P0481 will set.
Do you know how to do automotive electrical testing ?
Diagnostic Aids
Check for the following conditions:
• Poor connection at PCM -- Inspect harness connectors for the following items:
- Backed out terminals
- Improper mating
- Broken locks
- Improperly formed or damaged terminals
- Poor terminal to wire connections
• Damaged harness -- Inspect the wiring harness for damage.
• If the harness appears to be OK, disconnect the PCM, turn ON the ignition and observe a digital multimeter connected between the Fan Relay 2 driver circuit and ground at the PCM harness connector while moving connectors and wiring harnesses related to the series/parallel fan relay and the high speed fan relay. A change in voltage will indicate the location of the fault.
If the DTC cannot be duplicated and is determined to be intermittent, reviewing the Failure Records can be useful in determining when the DTC was last set. Also refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.

Code p0161 p0141 change the 02 sensor but still th light comes on.

Not likely both sensors fail same time look for a fuse or relay that has failed!

Reset codes and see if error returns if so and fuse is good check relay circuit.

Hope this helps?

Cooling fan will not turn on

Does it overheat? Which engine does your jeep have? If it has the 4.0, then it has an electrical cooling fan and the control relay most of the times fries. Its hidden under the bumper cover under the right hand headlight (seen from drivers position). Many time this relay fries due to the fan which is drawing too much current.
If your jeep has the 4.7, then it has a hydraulic cooling fan. That fan always idles (300 rpm) when the engine runs and will ramp up when the engine temperature gets too high. There is a control solenoid for this fan, but when its bad, then you should have the check engine light. Check for fault codes using the key dance: ignition switch off/run three times and leave in run at the third time. The odometer will show "DONE" when all ok, or any fault code(s).

Fan will not run when hot

Check fan relay. Remove passenger headlight, cut plastic to find relay. Replaced mine last night. Radiator fan spinning again. Was having temp spikes at start up and idling. Also bought coolant temp sensor but have not installed. Before I replaced fan relay, check engine light wasn't on. Now that the new relay is installed, light came on. Autozone and Discount Auto have an OBDII sensor you can borrow for free to read the codes stored on computer. Codes are generally stored when the check engine light comes on. Getting minr checked today. Will update solution later if needed. Relay was $55.

My fans that cool the engine do not come on. The car seem to cool down when driving but the temperature goes up when I am sitting still. The check engine light is on steady.

The first thing you're going to want to do is get that trouble code read. Some auto parts stores do it for free or you can buy a code scanner. Likely culprit is going to be the cooling fan itself, the relay, fuse, or the wiring/connectors leading to/from the fan and PCM. It could also be caused by a failed coolant temperature sensor.

So get that code read and start some diagnostics. I would suggest you start by checking fuses, relay, wiring. Then use a digital volt meter to see if the fan is getting 12 volts. Then try hooking the fans up directly to the battery to see if they work.

If you need more help, just let me know. Good luck!
