You can do it if you know what your doing however I would have a qualified mechanic do it. Depending on what year it is they are factory set.

There is no screw to adjust the idle , the PCM - engine computer controls the idle with the use of IAC valve , Idle air control valve ! The Base idle is set at the factory an you need not try to adjust it ! You will cause running problem an the check engine light to come on . How do I adjust idle speed?

You can't adjust the idle , There is a minimum idle adjustment set at the factory , you don't want to mess with that . The PCM / ECM ,engine computer controls the idle speed by the idle air control valve (motor) . You may have a dirty throttle plate mess with the base idle .Check out this video on ford base idle adjustment . How to adjust the idle speed on 1992 Dodge Ramcharger?

Its not really adjustable.
The computer controls idle speed via the idle air control valve.
You probably have a vac leak.

How do you adjust the carburetor on my 83 buick regal limited 4.1L-v6

There should be an idle control motor on the side of the carb. The computer controls idle speed by moving the stop on that control motor. The stop is adjustable and there may also be a base idle adjusting screw near the control motor.

Idle adjust

No, the idle is controlled bu the throttle position sensor, and I suspect that yours is having a problem. The idle is controlled by the ECU, and is not adjustable manually,.

Hi, my rpm stays on high after cleaning the idle control valve

An IAC (idle air control) motor is designed to adjust the engine idle RPM speed by opening and closing an air bypass passage inside the throttle body. The cars computer or ECM (electronic control module) receives information from various sensors and will output signals to adjust the IAC motor in or out to adjust engine idle speed by controlling engine idle air. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An idle air control motor can fail one of two ways, either the motor short circuits and stops working or the motor will develop high resistance and cause the idle air control motor to react slowly, either failure can cause the engine to stall at idle. When a trouble code scan is performed it sometimes won't always detect a failed or weak idle air control motor.

Just started idling rough, sometimes stalling

Shot in the dark here without knowing the vehicle but it could be an Idle Air Control valve starting to fail. An IAC (idle air control) motor is designed to adjust the engine idle RPM speed by opening and closing an air bypass passage inside the throttle body. The cars computer or PCM (powertrain control module) receives information from various sensors and will output signals to adjust the idle air control motor in or out to adjust engine idle speed by controlling engine idle air. To check the idle air control motor remove the unit, with the wires connected turn the key to the "on" position without starting the engine, the idle air control should move in or out. If the idle air control motor does nothing it has probably failed, replace it with a new unit and recheck system. Note: while the idle air control motor is removed clean (use aerosol carburetor cleaner) the passages the idle air control uses to control idle air speed, also inspect the idle air control for a build-up on the seating (pointed) end and clean as necessary.

Need to adjust my idle how do i do that

air idle control valve, I dont belive you have a ideler set screw..I do belive the problem is what I have Listed..........Best of luck

How can I tell if I need a new air idle control valve?
If your car has a rough idle or the idle cycles up and down, then chances are that you have a bad idle control valve. On modern vehicles, the purpose of the idle air control valve is to regulate your idle, and keep the idle smooth. The idle valve is controlled by the ECU or the computer, and when in gear the idle should be between 800 and 1000 rpm, and not in gear, between 700 and 900 rpm

Car wants to turn off

Hi,

Thanks for writing to Fixya.com.

I would check idle adjustment first. There are two idle controls on our cars, so it's not as straight forward as you'd think. There is the base idle (controlled by the screw) and the idle air control valve, controlled by the computer. This computer controlled value is used sparingly when needed. Mostly the car relies on the idle screw control. If this is set too low however, the computer will take over, and you'll think you have idle set correctly, until you let rpms drop from 2,000+ to idle, it will stall, or almost stall.

Adjust the idle screw up until idle raises to 1,000 rpms, then adjust it back down until you get to 850, but no more. If you adjust it more, the idle will stay at 850 because the computer controlled idle takes over. A lot of people (me included) will keep turning the screw all the way down, thinking everything is fine. Don't do it. Stop adjusting once you hit 850 rpms with a warm motor.

This is the easiest, quickest thing to check, so do it first before trying anything else.

Thanks for contacting Fixya and please accept the solution if it has helped you.
