Question about 1991 Buick Century

1 Answer

1991 buick century runs great. 20 minutes dies, shuts off. no signals no signs, no lights come on. nothing. Wait 10-15 minutes starts up, then dies in 5-10 minutes. I can shift to neutral while at stop lights and keep it idle, 50/50 it will stay or die. I put in brand new alluminum radiator. I'm in process of thermostat, but very hard to get to. Mechanic did diagnostic test on, or so he says, and says that car gets up 220 degress and shuts off, as safety precaution. He said he would start at water pump and thermostat, but can't guarantee it will fix my problem. I just moved from cold weather to florida. It used to run all day and not shut off unless it got real hot outside but then I could drive for 60 miles and be alright. My buddy thinks i need to flush coolant system and replace thermostat because the computer may be reading too hot when its not and shutting off the car. Dude, I'm real confused and sad, because I love her, she's a little beauty! I want to help her and drive her to find a job. She's been sitting for about three weeks. At night she drives great, it must be the cooler temperature. TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK!!! PLEASSSSSSSSSE! Thank You All! Joe Licata.

I can't get to the thermostat. It's under throttle body and between exhaust manifold. It's cold now and I took off the air intake, but it's still too hard. I can't get to one bolt on the exhaust to take off, and I can't get one bolt off the throttle body its all too crammed. And I'm not about to start taking all the little tubes, and cables and lines on the throttle body apart, without knowing what they are. I'm trying to get a ride to the store to buy the Hanes
Booklet for my car, but If I can't then I'm looking to the internet to learn how any suggestions????

When you remove your thermostat check the number stamped on the thermostat. In cold weather you want a high number and opposite cold weather. Right back with number

1991 buick century emergency flashers work turn signals do not

This more then likely is going to be your signal switch. It may just have gone bad being almost 20 years old. You can find these all over in junk yards for almost nothing.

91 Buick Century 2.5 L brake light on & battery light on

For the Brake light to stay on and the fluid is up...sounds like your sensor is playing dead......

For the battery to die after only (4) have a very big drain on the battery itself.....without the vehicle right here to look at would be very hard to even guess...electrical problems are a hands on chore...

I'd take it to your garage/mechainc
