Question about Mercury Cougar
This problem comes and goes? Sometimes the car will start running really rough, such as at a stop light, put it into first and go to take off. The car starts jerking, and the rpms go up. (4000) It continues this in ever gear. Now, also, if I just throw it in gear and step on the gas.. its like there is way to much power?? If I try to baby it, it jerks around alot. Then out of the blue, the light goes off and runs just great where I switch gears at 2000 rpm?
Run fault codes and check for cam/crank position sensor/MAP/MAF sensors and accelerator position sensor.

it might have a bad coil pack. does it miss at all? the plastic boots deteriate and cause an arcing in the spark plug tube. my experiences have always been high rpm is ignition be it a coil pack or something in ignition.

Just trowing some suggestions out there, but, I would check the idle air control valve (solenoid) or the throttle position sensor. If they check out then my last guess would be the map sensor or the vaccuum to the map sensor. Hope I was able to help. Best wishes.

I had the same kind of problem and I ended up solving it by actually checking for recalls for the 2000 Cougar and when you do, you'll see that there is a fuel pump recall. I dont' know if you've already done this but I figured i'd post this and try and help out!
