I had a similar problem on my 1998 A6 , It was the ABS module which is a common fault apparantly - Its an easy repair but a costly one , especially if taken to Audi Main Dealer.
What happens is the ABS warning light comes on and sometimes flickers on and off , when connected to the diagnostic computer at Audi there is a 'no communication' fault.
I originally took mine to Audi who charged me £45 to tell me that they didnt know what it was and that the car could do with a full wiring check at £450 + vat !!
Upon a little research on the internet I found that my symptoms were a common problem and the fault was the ABS module.
I ordered a reconditioned module from a place called 'ECU TESTING' , based at 52b station road, Ilkeston , derbyshire DE7 5LE.
It cost me £176.25 delivered and came with a 2 year warranty - that was in Feb 2007 so price may have changed slightly since then.
If I remember rightly the same part new from Audi was around the £750 + vat mark.
Fitting was really easy (even for me!!) and took just 15 minutes.

2002 A6 3.0l petrol. Intermittent starting problem where car turns over but won't fire up. Could it be ignition coils? If so, what sort of expense am I looking at to repair/replace?

It could be the ignition coils, but not very likely because there are 6 of them and usually only 1 or 2 will fail at the same time. The car would still start but run a bit rough. Get the computer scanned with a VAG-COM (you can find a shop that will do a scan, or take it to Autozone- they will sometimes scan for free) and see what errors are being thrown

Have a 99 Audi a6 2.8 hard start but when i get it started idle is vey rough at first then is fine. Only happens when car has not been started for about five to six hours.

Could be fouled spark plugs, oil leaking into the cylinder head, a bad O2, or MAF sensor, leaking head gasket, amongst other things. Try to get the system scanned and see where the faults are. You need a VAG-COM to scan the computer, or take it to a repair shop and pay for a scan, or, take it to an auto parts store like autozone- they will do a scan for free sometimes. Give them a call first.

Abs & engine oil droping sign appears on meter

I just replaced ABS control module on VW Passat 2001 , with the same simptoms and it took care of it.
Try to tap on ABS module with something and see if the lights are going off and on.
Very common problem on VAG vehicles.(VAG - Volkswagen Audi Group).

Have just renewed two front brake noses that were damaged, abs l

ABS System must be obligatory bleeded also using a diagnostic scantool like VAS, VAG-COM, Bosch KTS, ... connected to the Data Link Connector (DLC) of the car. In the ABS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) menu, select the ABS bleeding option, then follow instructions on the screen !!!

My dashboard reads stop, break fault (service manual)

Your ABS module is bad. This is a very common problem with VW and many cars. To make sure, you can do a scan with a VAG scan tool. VAG is the only one that reads all the VW systems. $50 will get you a nice one.
You could check out all the wheel sensors, and the magnet wheels behind them for any damage. If they look good, then it is most likey the module. The electronic module comes off of the ABS pump with 6 screws and 2 electrical connectors. Sometimes you need to loosen the steering pump fluid resevoir, and the windshield wiper fluid tank for easy access, but not very hard. will do the repairs for uinder $200. The dealer will want over $800 for the whole job.
The car will drive like it does now with out the module, and the turn around from the shop is fast. I do use their service from time to time as I work on cars.
Good Luck!

I need a diagnostic tool. Is the VAG COM tool a good one for debugging Audi S4 (2000 year model)?

vag com is the closest you are going to get without having a real audi/vw diagnostic computer.
