will the diagnostic be able to help me even though the service light or check engine light are not coming on? the lights turn off once the truck is running its just when i am coming to a stop that it dies out on me.

  • oscar_reyes Apr 24, 2009

and where can i get this diagnostic test done? like at an auto parts store or is that done like at a shop? i cleaned up the connectors to the battery and it ran ok for about a good 20 minutes then started to die out again. could this mean that it may just be a bad battery cable or connection?

  • oscar_reyes Apr 24, 2009

what i checked was the connectors, but there was a lot of corrosion on the positive battery cable. and so i finally cleaned the cable where it connects to the actual battery connector. so then there is a chance that it could be a bad cable?

ok i've cleaned the battery cables real well, i've run the diagnostic on the truck and nothing came up. i was told that i would need to leave the truck running for a while so everything can reset. i drove the truck around for a good 30 mins making stops here and there and the truck is still wanting to die on me and the idle is too low when i have it in drive. but goes up when i have the a/c on or it is in neutral or park. i was told that i may be able to adjust the throttle/idle is this possible?

my cousin is having the same problem with his 02 montero sport. we have changed the alternator and batterie. cables and connectors. we took it to a shop to run a test and it showed nothing was wrong with the vehicle. no trouble codes or nothing. after changing the batterie and alt. the vehicle ran great and had power untill we got home shut the engin off and started it again. than it started the same **** over again.

i was wondering if anybody has changed the map or isc sensors on an 02 montero sport and if it had fixed the problem

Two areas to consider are the MAP sensor and the Idle Control Valve, both pricey items for your vehicle. I'd go to a local autoparts chain and see if they can run a free diagnostic test for you. The codes will point you in the right direction.

You don't neccesarily need 2 have a service light on to have codes come up on a diag. test. If you were to have the test run and come up clear, it could be as simple as a bad bettery cable, a weak connection etc. I ruled these out because you said you just changed the alt and battery which is why I'm thinking it's either MAP sensor or ICV but I'd rather have a diag test to confirm.

Most chain autoparts stores i.e. Autozone will be happy to perform a free diagnostic test. It can also be done at a repair shop but they will usually charge for the test. I assumed the battery cables were fine since you would have checked them out when you replaced the alternator and battery.

Very possible. I'm sorry but I had assumed we could rule out a bad battery cable because of what we discussed earlier but by all means thoroughly clean both battery cables and run the engine for awhile and see if your problem comes back. If it does, a diag test is definitely in order

Hi,
Did the engine stops?
Sounds like your battery died and the alternator stop charging the battery?
Did you try to restart the engine?
Give us more details please.

Check system for shorts. I have a 02 Sport that I am on my 6th alternator since last November, 2010. The last time, my car broke down outside of Natchez and I had a shade tree mechanic work on the car. He found several corroded & frayed ground wire connections. I don't know if this will solve my problem, but it's probably worth the check.

I have a 2000 Mitsubishi Montero . Alternator problems

Verify your connections at the battery, not just for being tight but for corrosion as well, on the terminal and the cable.

Also check for oil on the bottom of the alternator. The right hand cam seal is notorious for leaking directly onto the alternator, killing them quickly.

That all being said, I haven't seen an aftermarket alternator last on a Montero for more than a month or two; so if your new ones are not OEM, you might consider getting a genuine one if your corrosion and oil leak checks are OK.
