Question about 1992 Jeep Wrangler

1 Answer

I have a 92 wrangler 4.0 six 5 speed. It would not start and the fuel pump is quite noisy. I could not hear it. So I check the relay and replaced it with a new spare I carry and nothing I smacked the gas tank rock cover , with the key in the on position and I heard the fuel pump come on. I told this to the mechanic and he unstall a new pump. I drve it home and the next day I drve about 6 miles and stoped for five minutes, guess what not start and could not hear the fuel pump come on, so I smacked the tank cover as before but no response from the pump. My mechanic checked it out and replaced both the rollover and pump relays kept over night and tried it in the morning and called me to pick it up. I drove home 2miles turned it off for about 15 minute. I went to start it again , same thing no start and no noise from the pump. I tried the old smack the tank cover but to no avail. I think the new pump is defective it wasn't a cheep pump it was over 160 dollars for the pump plus 3hours labor. HELP!!

The ASD relay shuts off 3 things
1 spark
2: fuel pump
3: and kills injector power.

you guessed and he guessed.
so>>>>
when the car cranks and not start, we scan it next
or if no scan tool, you are left with the key on 3 times get codes test/

if you key on and the CEL lamp is dead that means the ECU is dead
or fuse bad, cracked or rusty.

when the pump goes dead, make sure the ASD energizes
or its all just a waste of time back aft.
the ASD closes for about 2 seconds,
the pump runs too.
if the ECU sees errors during the cranking for 2 seconds.
the ECU drops the ASD and PUMP dead.
by law. too. the anti crash and burn logic is inside the ECU/PCM

the 91-92 ,we have no cheap scan tools until 1993.so....
to fix any modern car EFI it takes a scan tool or lots of labor
so get in the car, crank for 5 seconds as that service manual chapter 8d tells you, then release the key, then turn off and on 3 times
inside 3 seconds, and see the CEL flash out codes.
(no DRB scan tool that is all you get there)
if no hope still.
see the 7-8 ways the ASD Can drop here.
your car is older, and less ways to drop out.

ALSO
you said smack tank, sure.
but ment , smack it, then get in car and pump runs 2 seconds key on, right,,
did you consider the ground wire to the pump is bad.?
did you condsider the power wire or pins bad, in cars harness
and the smacking jarred thosE>?

I use a voltmeter, to find all this when failed.
my guess, your mech, didnt do that first?
if he did, and 12vdc is across pump for 2 seconds pump is bad.
if he did and 0v or low, low volts is across pump pins the its not the pump or is wire, connectors, to pump (harness et al)
or ASD DID THIS ON PURPOSE>

next would be measure all 4 ASD pins,
see whats going no here, and pump relay pins
while failed.
Diagnosing, it after it self cures it self is near impossible.

You do not have to replace the fuel pump at a specific mileage.
I hate to speculate without physically inspecting the vehicle, but, my best solution here & now may be the fuel pump. Now, I would not go out & buy one before you had proper diagnosis. Here is one test, but you will need to have to experience the stall again, and then test to see if you have fuel pressure at the injectors. If you have no fuel pressure, replace the pump. Fuel filter issues do not "come & go", they stay, and your car would not run properly. Also, a fuel pump failure will not set a computer code on this particular model vehicle. Hope this helps..

Fuel injected or carb? Make sure fuel line itself is clear. Some pumps are designed to self regulate (carb systems) some continually pump and a psi regulator sends back the excess fuel back to the tank (fuel inj systems) If the line is obstructed then pump can't deliver fuel fulltime.

If you think pump is not on consistent, try running a dedicated wire through a switch directly to the pump. If it works then you are looking for an electrical fault going to pump. Good luck.

Have you checked the cam sensor? Also does that vehicle have a "throttle position sensor"? Some cars use both MAP and MAF sensors, not sure about your particular vehicle but if it is one of those, cleaning the MAF wouldn't hurt. Good luck.

Sounds good ninemil, I would also check for any bent or disconnected fuel lines that would restrict the fuel flow as well. I do not know if this has a fuel pump assembly but you should be able to hear it actuate on when the key is in the "on" position. How did it act before you shut it off? Was it harder to start? Make sure you buy a high quality pump (Carter) many of those cheaper brands will fail trust me.

1995 Jeep Wrangler 2.5L Fuel Pump/Check engine light

Could be one of several items...I'd check the fuel pump relay, auto shutdown relay and the ignition switch itself. I'd bet on it being one of those relays but, we all have been fooled at least once!!! I'd also make sure that body and engine grounding is good and clean. Relays can't work properly without a good ground.

Fuel pump humming

Hi Bill,

I've got a 91 Wrangler. I'm not sure what your problem is though.

I assume you have the 4.0l fuel injected straight six.

Is the fuel pump on all the time?

Does the car run?

Could you comment back with a bit more detail about the problem?

Thanks
Mike

Pump is in the tank...check it carefully before removing it. relay and filter can also give you similar problems.
