Warning bell won't stop sounding

My warning bell keeps sounding because of a false door open indicator lights. how can I solve this problem OR stop the the warning bell sound?

The Key-in-Ignition Warning is the problem.  As I stated, all of the door open lights are on when all of the doors are closed.  So, I guess this is causing the problem.  How do I get that warning bell to stop?

  • midijim Apr 27, 2009

Couldn't find any driver door, passenger door, tailgate door switch of any kind.  What I did discover are 4 push in switches on the side entrance door.  So far, cleaning button contacts and pushing them in as far as possible hasn't worked.  Looks like I'm headed for the car dealer.  One thing I did forget was to let you know that I only have this problem when the weather is warm!  Never when it is colder than 50.  Also, while the warning lights never shut off, the warning chime will stop sounding as long as I don't turn on my head lights.

Section 13-09: Gauges, Warning Devices — Chime System 1996 Windstar Workshop Manual
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Warning Chime Systems Three distinct sounds are used to indicate the area of concern. Seat belt warning generates 1 chime per second
key-in-ignition generates 2 chimes per second
headlight on generates 4 chimes per second.
Key-In-Ignition Warning The key-in-ignition warning will sound when the driver's front door (20125) is opened with the key in the ignition switch. It will continue to sound until the key is removed, the front door is closed, the ignition switch is turned to START or the vehicle speed is over 24 kmh (15 mph).

Safety Belt Warning When the ignition switch is turned to RUN or START from OFF or ACC, the chime will sound for six seconds or until the safety belt is buckled.

  • The safety belt warning indicator lamp (10C859) will activate for 60 seconds or until the driver's safety belt is fastened. Both the chime and lamp activate at the same time.
Anytime the ignition switch is released from START and returns to RUN while the safety belt lamp or chime is activated, the safety belt warning lamp or chime will remain activated until either the timing sequence has been executed, or the safety belt is buckled.

Headlamp Switch On Warning The chime will be activated if the headlamps or parking lamps are ON, the key is not in the ignition and the driver's door is opened. The chime will sound at a rate of four per second.

look for the driver door switch on the body, usually near the bottom.

Put your key in the ignition and turn the key to on if you need to, to get the door to chime.

Press the button in by hand and see if the chime stops.

If it does, then you need to adjust the door to close tighter or replace the switch, or put a thin, sticky "button" on the door so it lines up to contact the switch. You can buy them at Lowes, Home Depot, etc. They are litle bumpers for your cabinet doors.

    report back on test results.

    You are getting there.

I'm sure it is the driver door switch. It may be part of the door latch as one piece.

The generic electronic module activates the interior lamp relay when a signal is received from the driver, passenger, liftgate, or sliding door ajar switches.

Sounds like your door sensors are going bad and are not relaying to the computer that the doors are fully closed, with that being said you will need to replace them and also at the same time it will stop the door locks from going crazy

SOURCE: Warning bell won't stop sounding

i went thru a considerable amount of relays in my windstar. I would suggest stopping by a junk/recycling/wrecking yard and picking up a handfull of relays for the windstar/freestar. look under the dash in the fuse panel for the relays and replace any in the circuits affected. if you are in luck the relay circuits will be shown on the cover of the fuse panel.

if the problem is the sliding door... there are a row of circular copper contact points on the door jam as it slides shut as well as "fingers" on the door that make contact with them when you close the door. Use an eraser or similar to make sure the contacts are clean.

Do not overlook the relays in the engine compartment near the battery as a cause for some of the issues you are having.

as a side note... i dropped into my local ford dealer and talked nicely to the parts guy.... he gave me a print out of all the fuses/relays and their locations which was a huge help. give that a try.

let me know how you made out.... and take a moment if this was a successful fix to rate this solution.. thanks

Robert

P.S. i was able to manage almost 400,000 kms from my windstar before i sold it. and the only issue it had then was that it would not stay running (a fairly easy fix)

2006 BMW X5 Door open message, inside light goes off & on, and the alarm keeps going off

You have a defective door ajar sensor switch. The switch is located on the door latch of each door inside the door. In order to find out which one is the cause of the false warning a trip to the dealer is required so they can scan the systems control module while the warning is on. If you want to guess start by replacing the drivers door switch first.

2006 Jetta - Driver door indicator light/sound not working

Sounds like a sticky door switch.

Open the driver’s door. With a screwdriver or equivalent trip the latch on the door 2 clicks so it is in the locked position, just under that finger get a can of Brakecleen and hose the snot out of it. I mean really firehouse it. As fast as it evaporates I still had it running out of the door drains. Be careful not to get cleaner on the plastic door panel, trust me take extra care.
Open the outside door handle to release the latch, then open and shut the door for a while, like a few dozen times, to work the latch. Repeat as necessary. Follow up by shooting some PB Blaster, WD-40 or whatever light lube is handy.
If this doesn’t work, give it might take a day or so to work free. If still nothing then the micro switch might actually be broken, but this usually does the trick

Warning bell is on when doors are opened, goes off when shut or ignition on, all lights off, doors shut, normal. open doors with ign. off and bell sounds

I'm assuming that the key is removed from the ignition and it's still chiming..
Take some lock lube spray and spray a bit in your ignition key slot. Then take the key and insert it in and out a few times. This may release a stuck contact in the ign. switch.
The chime will also sound if the lights are left on...worth a check too.
These are cheap fix/checks...hope they help.
