How much will it cost me to get the top hat valve stem seals replaced in my 1991 escort

I have a 1991 escort 1.9...It's burning bluish smoke. It runs awesome though. It has 188,000 miles on it. Can I use an additive in the oil or should I look into replacing the valve seals/guides? Is this exspensive?

How to replace a valve guide seal on a 18.5 hp ohv briggs

Pull the plug.
With the piston up close to TDC, take a length of ~5/16 diameter cord and feed it into the sparkplug hole till the chamber is full (leave a length to pull out the cord.) The purpose of this is to keep the valves from dropping into the cylinder which would mean you have to pull the head.
Pull the valve cover, remove the valve keeper and springs, remove and replace the seals. Reassemble. Adjust the valves.
.006 int/ .008 exhaust. Install valve cover. Pull out cord.
Replace the plug.
Don't nut up over the cord thing. Kart racers use that technique all the time.

How do I change valve stem seals on a Skyteam ST50

This is not a "drive way" repair... you need to do one of two things.. sometimes you can get a connector that can replace the spark plug to keep air pressure in the cylinder (THAT CYLINDER MUST BE AT TOP DEAD CENTER ON THE COMPRESSION STROKE!!!!) that will keep the valves closed..( YOU MUST HAVE A LARGE HIGH PRESSURE-HIGH FLOW AIR COMPRESSOR!!!) you can remove the valve springs one at a time (have a way to compress the springs??) ..and replace the valve stem at a time.. IF you DO NOT have the tools to accomplish this, --- YOU CAN REMOVE THE HEADS.. hold the valves in place and remove the valve springs.. and then change the seals, you must have a valve spring compressor to accomplish this.
Does this seem like something you can do..?? If you have never done this??.. PLEASE just pay a qualified professional to change them!! You will need intake gaskets, head gaskets, valve cover gaskets, valve stem seals.. maybe the valves will need re-seating..
just to name a few things... get the idea...

No you can't..
Fitting valve stem seals involves removing the valve springs. This means the valve has to be held in place by a valve spring compressor (bought from almost any spares outlet). The springs are compressed by placing one end of the compressor tool on the valve face and the other end over the spring cap, then squeezing the tool to compress the spring, then removing the split collets that hold the spring in place, removing the spring cap and spring, then eventually you have access to the stem seals.
The head has to be removed to accomplish all this.

Smoking issues after warm start up are usually caused by brittle valve stem seals and oil leaks down through the valve guide. These can be changed on the engine without head removal. Just use a air compressor to keep the cylinder full of air with the valves closed then remove the rocker arms counting the number of turns to keep adjustment. With a on car spring compressor remove spring. The valve keepers can be tight in retainer so tapping the retainer with released tension they will break free. Most chevy heads have 2 oil seals a hat type (positive spring seal) and a o-ring seal. With spring removed take both seals off there are very brittle. Replace the hat seal first then install spring with retainer. the o-ring seal needs to stay in retainer and in lower groove then install valve keepers and slowly release the spring pressure, Once spring compressor is removed then tap valve stem with hammer to seat keepers then release air. Also check Intake manifold bolts for proper torque. A loose manifold will also **** in oil bolt torque is 35-40 ft. lbs cast iron 30-35 ft. lbs aluminum manifold.

Oil in a cylinder is never good. There are several ways for the oil to get there and different prices to fix it.

Valve stem seals go directly around the valve and keep oil from the valve train from entering the combustion chamber. A worn or cracked seal can let oil run into the wrong place. Depending on how the camshaft and valve lifters are fitted, the valve stem is at the bottom of the camshaft and lifter. The overhead Cam models bury to valve stem deep inside the head.

Good practice would be to replace all seals at same time, but 1 cylinder could be done independently. But you are usually doing 90% of the work to do 1 set of seals. If a V-6 engine do the bad bank completely.

Head gasket, oil circulates through passages. Requires removal of everything above the head so gasket can be changed.

Bad Oil ring on Piston. Requires removal of head, oil pan, possibly motor to access crankshaft.

There are some tests which can help tell the difference between the problems. Some of it is visual so you need some disassembly for that. This is not going to be as simple as changing a waterpump or an Alternator. But the valve stem seals are reasonable and the head gasket is not so bad.

Can not say what labor will cost, but it will be probably 80% of the bill.

Leaking valve seals. I want to know the cost to replace versus trading in the vehicle. The vehicle has 176000 miles and is in perfect condition. In fact, the original brakes still have 2/3 of the pads...

The valve stem seals can be replaced without removing the cylinder head(s) using special tools, so the cost would be be around $600.00 for the V6 engine and about $350.00 for the 4 cylinder engine. Since you don't mention which engine you have I provided both estimates. Keep in mind the parts to do this are the least amount of the cost (about $30), the major cost is labor, labor rates vary wildly from state to state even city to city, so get multiple estimates, Any well trained technican and well equipped repair shop can do this basic repair. If the new seals don't correct the problem which I assume is smoke then the engine has other much more expensive problems like worn piston rings and worn valve stem guides.

There is blue smoke coming from the tail pipe. I spoke to someone about it and they said its oil in the combustion chamber. If this is the problem, how much would something like that cost to fix?

Hi there,

This advice you received is correct.

Blue smoke emmitted from the tailpipe signifies the engine is burning oil.

Possibilities are:

  • BAD RINGS - and engine with bad rings will not only burn oil, there will also be a significant loss in power, especially noticeable when driving up hill.
  • BAD VALVE STEM SEALS - with this condition, blue smoke mainly appears during acceleration.
  • Turbocharger - if your engine is fitted with a turbocharger, the seals on the turbo could be leaking.
In regards to the Bad rings and Bad valve stem seals, this may require some serious money, unless your vehicle is covered by a warranty.

For Bad rings, you will need to have a "wet compression test" done on your engine to determine if the rings are bad. Having these replaced will be expensive and in some cases, a replacement engine (with a warranty) may be an alternative option (or sell your vehicle and put your money towards another vehicle).

For Valve stem seals, I suggest only having the stem seals replaced (nothing else - don't let them talk you into any major work) to see if this cures the problem first. If blue smoke is still emitted from the exhaust, then you may be up for a major valve job, in which case you should again consider a replacement engine (with a warranty) or selling your vehicle.

Most generally when an engine smokes on start up it is a sign of worn valve guide seals.If this engine has over 150,000 miles on it and/or it has ever been overheated it is very possible that the valve guides themselves may have escessive clearance and are the cause of the valve seal leak.These vehicles have a history of cylinder head problems and if this is determined to be the problem, the only true repair for it is to have the cylinder head rebuilt or replaced.This process can cost upwards of $900.00 to $1,200.00 to do so you might just put up with the problem until it become unbareable. Always be sure to keep the engine oil full and changed on regular interval of 3 mos/ 3,000 miles and use Lucas oil stabilizer to help minimize the oil useage .

Problem with Toyota

You have worn valve stem oil seals. These fit over your valve stems and prevent oil from running down the valves into your cylinders.To replace them you have to remove the cylinder head and remove each valve in turn to replace them.
