This vehicle does not have a cam sensor .The ICM provides a synthesized cam signal to the PCM based on these inputs. The PCM uses the cam signal to synchronize fuel injection.
The powertrain control module (PCM) supplies a signal on each of the ignition control (IC) timing control circuits to the ignition control module (ICM). The ICM fires the correct ignition coil at the correct time based on the signals. The ICM detects if cylinder 1 or cylinder 3 is on the compression stroke by sensing the secondary voltage and polarity of each side of the ignition coil. The ICM detects this voltage with sensing circuitry integrated into each ignition coil. The higher voltage is on the compressing cylinder. This is called compression sense ignition. The ICM provides a synthesized cam signal to the PCM based on these inputs. The PCM uses the cam signal to synchronize fuel injection.
This system consists of the following circuits:
• An ignition voltage circuit
• A ground circuit
• A camshaft position (CMP) sensor signal circuit
• An IC timing control circuit for cylinders #1 and #4
• An IC timing control B circuit for cylinders #2 and #3
This ignition system does not use a conventional camshaft position (CMP) sensor that detects valve train position. The ignition controls module (ICM) detects when #1 or #3 cylinder has fired on the cylinders compression stroke using sensing circuitry integrated within each coil. The sensing circuit detects the polarity and the strength of the secondary voltage output, the higher output is always at the event cylinder. The ignition control module (ICM) sends a CMP signal to the powertrain control module (PCM) based on the voltage difference between the event and waste cylinder firing energy. This system is called compression sense ignition. By monitoring the CMP and crankshaft position (CKP) signals, the PCM can accurately time the operation of the fuel injectors. If the PCM receives an intermittent CMP signal from the ICM, the CMP Resync Counter on the scan tool will increment. When the PCM cannot use the information from the CMP signal, a DTC will set. DTC P0341 sets when the PCM detects too many CMP Resyncs within a certain amount of time.
Can you spray fuel in the throttle body and get it to run. If so you need to check the fuel pump or the fuel filter. If you are sure it is just not firing then you need to check the coils, dist, rotor and module in the dist to determine which is at fault. You might also want to check the catalytic converter and make sure it is not plugged. It is in the exhaust system ahead of the muffler. Normally there is a o2 sensor in the pipe and if you can remove it and see if the car starts. Too much back pressure on the engine will not allow the fuel to enter the cylinders and fire.
Check the pickup coil in the dist. and make sure you don't have a broken wire. It is under the advance plate in the dist. and has 2 very small wire going to it and one maybe loose or broken and it will keep the module from firing. OOPs you said the module is firing so maybe the new module is not 100% you might want to try another one because the fire should be strong after the module unless the wires are bad and that is probably not the case as it is hard to believe all of them would go bad at one time. Finally, be sure the module is grounded on the plate in the dist.
Fuel system checked? If OK, did you "reset" the ECC also called the ECM or PCM which is the computer of the vehicle? Do it by unhooking "both" battery cables, waiting 15 minutes, rehook then try to start and see if this helps. If not you may have to start on the ground floor by checking all fuses, crank and cam sensors, ICM, etc.
You should be displaying the check engine light on. Rent a scanner, read out any codes, and pursue to repairs. Non-start can be one of many things--from a defective crankshaft/camshaft position sensor, a bad fuel pump/filter, defective ignition system, or even a mechanical failure within the engine itself. Was the engine running when it quit or failed to start after parked? Hope this helps!
Find the pressure test port (looks like a tire valve) on the fuel distribution rail over the injectors and place a can over the open end of the valve. Press the inner pin to release fuel into the can. If the pressure seems to fall rapidly, replace the fuel filter. Is the check engine light on? Rent a scanner, read any code(s), and pursue to repair(s). A bad crankshaft sensor or camshaft sensor can prevent the injectors from firing fuel into the engine.
