Question about Honda Passport

1 Answer

I have a 1995 Honda Passport with a 3.2 V6. The engine runs great, but I sprayed a lot of belt conditioner on the timing belt, and it needs to be cleaned off. So what I really need to know is if I'm facing the motor, which way can I keep rotating the crankshaft with a breaker bar so that nothing gets messed up internally in the engine. Would it be to the right which is clockwise or left counter clockwise? Also is rubbing alcohol ok to clean the belt or what would be good to use?

You replace timing belt can not clean them.if replacing timing belt you need a haynes or chilton repair manual so you can see location timing marks.

SOURCE: Not good.....replacing timing belt on saab

I'm certain that the camshaft pullies and probably the head have reference marks that must be aligned. I can't tell you how to set them however and I think you know that guessing could be very expensive.
Check you local library for a Haynes (1st choice) or Chilton service manual or, and I think everyone should own one for their vehicle, buy one. We have three different vehicles and each has its own manual. They are not only valuable for DIY stuff but also for judging the fairness of an estimate on a repair you don't want to do at home. They cost between $20-$30 US and considering what mistakes cost, that's cheap.

The crankshaft should have the timing mark on the crank pulley (Notch in the outer edge of the pulley near the keyway) It should align with the timing mark on the oil pump. (With the keway turned to about the 3 O'clock position.)

Align the marks on the camshaft timing pulleys with the corresponding dots on the front plate.

If you are installing a new belt, it should have 2 solid white lines printed on it that you would align with the timing marks on the cams and a dotted white line to align with the timing mark on the crank.

It makes a difference which way you put the belt on. (Which edge faces the front of the engine.) Most, but not all brands of belts have arrows and the word "FRONT" on them to tell you which edge of the belt shoud face the front of the motor. If there is no mark to tell you which edge is front, the letters on the belt must be able to be read correctly as viewed from the front of the vehicle.

I have a '95 with the 3.2L. V6 fuel injected engine. With all the electronic emission controls for ignition and fuel delivery to the engine, things like engine timing, fuel mixture adjustments are a thing of the past. No points, rotor in the distributor, ergo no manual engime timing adjustment necessary. It''s automatic?

My 95 Passport is running rich...

Try resetting computer and unplugging O2 sensor, and see what happens, if fine replace sensor. Ther are only so many things that can cause a rich condition, excess fuel pressure, EGR valve leaking exhaust into intake when it should be closed, no vacuum to fuel pressure regulator or ruptured fuel pressure regulator diaphram, no vaccum to MAP sensor, Air or Coolant temp senosr reading cold when engine is hot. Your mechainc shold be able to eliminate all these.
