Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

My wife has a Mazda tribute 02, she reversed the polarity while trying to jump her car. Now the interior lights, radio and power locks don't work. The battery also has a constant drain so I gave to jump it every day. We took the car to a shop and had them check the voltage at the battery, and fuses, he also used the fluke to check the fuse box, everything checked good. Does anyone have an idea as to what else could be checked?

First the battery will drain if there is current draw
to check current draw with an ampmeter to battery
to find out the drain unplug fuse one at the time you will find the circuit
second the battery can hold the charge itself (crack,or short cell)
when reversed the polarity it give a good good shake

OLder cars YEs you can jump it without a battery. But in newer cars that use computers and advanced Eltronic ignition/timing/ful injection you have to have power to the cars computer. without a good battery the car will not run.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Did you check the fuse yet? The fuse you are looking for is in the passenger compartment fuse panel, in the number 6 position and should be a 10 amp fuse (see picture below) I hope this helps and good luck.

I accidentally hooked up the battery, reversing the polarity. I corrected the screw-up, but now the radio and interior lights will not come on. Fuses look good. any suggestions on fixing the radio &...

Ouch! Okay, do you have a volt meter? If so you need to check the voltage at your fuse box to make sure that you are getting power to fuse panel If you are getting power to the panel, then you have to diagnose the power issue from the fuse panel to the radio and dome lights. All the lights not working? The radio may have an in-line fuse as well. If you don't have a volt meter, go get one.

CAr stereo not working after battery jump

Doubtful, my guess would be fried. Does the unit get power?

Check the fuses, especially the one for car stereo. If that's not blown you'll need to put the head unit and check the fuse either on the 12V power wire or on the wiring harness or on the back of the actual unit.

I've seen that same thing done several times and usually the damage is more drastic, consider yourself lucky.
