Question about 2002 Nissan Xterra

1 Answer

Have 2002 Nissan Xterra with a 3.3 engine. The engine stopped running 5 months after doing a cylinder head rebuild. She would crank, but wouldn't start. Checked trouble codes and found P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor or circuit fault.Sensor not sold alone, so I replaced the distributor. The truck started right up. after a warm up she stalled out. Cranked her up, she started and stalled out again. did this several times with the same results. Next day she started right up again and we went through the whole situation again. However, this time I had a trouble code P0120. I checked the TPS and ranges were off so I replaced it. Truck started right up. However, I am still having the same problem, she starts up, she warms up, then she shuts down, after the first shut down she starts up and stalls out a few seconds later. Ain't that just like a woman? Anybody got any ideas?

Sounds like TPS sensor. If you replaced the TPS sensor you have to put a relearn program on it again to calibrate the sensor. If you don't have a programmer or know someone you have to take it to a shop and have it done takes literally 5 min

SOURCE: 000 NISSAN Xterra -- after warming up, loses RPM by 500-1000..... have replaced ignition wires and distributor, checked mass air flow sensor and OK.....

I had a problem on my Nissan Xterra 2000. Symptons sound similar. In my case, it ran fine for a while and then suddenly the engine starts to stumble and lose output. At one point it did not even have enough HP to move. Irregular idling too. Thought it was water in my fuel. Bought water remover from the store and added to gas tank. Problem did not go away. Instead, "Service Engine Soon" light came on. Had to have it towed to the dealer as there was no way the engine could keep up with traffic. Dealer replaced the "Crank Position Sensor" today. Parts $33.00, Labor: $300 (about 3 hrs worth of work). Seems to work fine now but I will wait and see. Dealer also stated that Distributor bearing appears to be noisy and will need to be replaced sooner or later. I will wait for it to go before I fix that.

My 95 honda civic cp will not was running fine when I bought was almost out of gas so I put more in still wouldn't crank...I've checked the battery, fuel filter, spark...

No crank and no start are two different things.
For no start, you will have to figure out if it is fuel or ignition related.
You can run a compression test on the cylinders to check the head gasket. Usually a leaking head gasket will not cause it to not start all at once.
Hondas are known for fuel pump relay problems. Do you know for a fact the injectors have fuel pressure ?

How locate the knock sensor on 2002 nissan xterra

Your knock sensor bolts into the side of the cyclinder head opposite side of your oil cap. It has a banjo type fitting, where it has an open center where the bolt threads through and it will have a electrical connection "pig tail" coming off the sensor and running back to the engine harness. Hope that helps.

How to replace a knock sensor on a 2002 nissan xterra

Unplug the electrical plug/connector from the base of sensor. You will have to take out bolt from the head of the sensor that threads into the cylinder head. Thats really it. Unplug - Unscrew - replace!

Looking for distributor wire diagram

If your engine is a four cylinder, the firing order is as follows; from left to right on the block..1-2-3-4...look at the top of the distributor cap: counter clockwise from #1, the order is...1-3-4-2. If your engine is a six cylinder, face the front of the engine...left bank is: 1-3-5...right bank is: 2-4-6...look at top of distributor cap starting with counter clockwise...1-2-3-4-5-6. Let me know how you make out. Master

2000 nissan xterra v6 xe 2wd auto trans quit running idling .

Well, I hate to inform you of this, but all Nissan engines except the V-6 that was used in the Quest mini-van up to 2003 are interference engines- meaning that if a valve is fully open and the corresponding piston travels to Top Dead Center (TDC), they will contact forcefully resulting in a bent valve.

I have seen this many times as most people don't want to spend the $500 to have their timing belt replaced.

Fortunately for you, Nissan cylinder head castings are built pretty strong. I have pulled the cylinder heads and replaced bent valves (be sure to "lap them in" with a good valve lapping compound) and reassembled the engines with fantastic results. Most engines have broken valve guides and valves and pistons, but Nissans typically don't break these things.

This is a very involved job and should not be attempted unless you have pretty extensive experience with the internal combustion engine, so I would recommend a trusted mechanic or, ultimately, your local dealer.

Depending on labor rate, you're looking in the ball park of $1500 for this repair.

I hope this has been helpful!!

Check for a loose wire around the ignition. Also the ground wire from the engine to the body. The steering should not actually lock up, but will be very hard to turn when the engine stops. I assume it idles and starts fine?? But it shouldn't! Frankster016
