Question about 1988 Lincoln Town Car

1 Answer

My car sometimes shuts of while in motion or sometimes after the car has been parked not running for an hour or so it won't start. If I let it sit for another 1/2 hour to 45 minutes it will start right up. I recently had a diagnostic test done in which a ignition control module was suggested. I had that replaced be the problem continues to happen. Could this be a fuel pump, distributer, or ignition switch issue, and how to find out which?

Sounds like the "crank position sensor" This would explain the intermittent problem...a visual inspection does not always confirm this. A good mechanic can confirm however. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: 1995 Town Car cranks but won't start, intermittent problem

First, try swapping the eec relay with a known good unit and see if the problem persists.
Second, you could be experiencing a problem with your ignition module overheating, causing high resistance in the circuit. When the vehicle sits for a while, the circuit cools and will allow the current to flow again.

SOURCE: 1996 Town Car.The fuel gauge reads CO after the

The owner's manual addresses this problem. It tells you to take it to a dealer for repair. The problem is most likely the fuel gauge sending unit which is located in the fuel tank and is mounted just above the fuel pump. It is probably sticking at the level that it was at for so long. It can be replaced by raising the rear of the car and accessing the fuel pump and sending unit from under the car behind the rear axle. Disconnect the two fuel lines and unplug the wire harness and remove the lockring with a hammer and screwdriver. Lift and turn the fuel pump assembly out for inspection and/or replacement . THE FUEL TANK DOES NOT HAVE TO BE REMOVED. I have done this many times.

Check the wiring. to Coil, plugs, Crank Positioning Sensor. check to see if the wire is in good condition sometimes if wire is checked, in poor condition it will allow bleed through especially when the wires get hot. This is why it will often start when engine cools down and why it shuts off when your sitting cause it heats the wires up there is not the cool air running accross the wires when sitting. Good Luck and a grt day. Would appreciat 4 thumbs up if this was helpful.
