Question about 1988 Lincoln Town Car
Sounds like the "crank position sensor" This would explain the intermittent problem...a visual inspection does not always confirm this. A good mechanic can confirm however. Hope this helps.

First, try swapping the eec relay with a known good unit and see if the problem persists.
Second, you could be experiencing a problem with your ignition module overheating, causing high resistance in the circuit. When the vehicle sits for a while, the circuit cools and will allow the current to flow again.

The owner's manual addresses this problem. It tells you to take it to a dealer for repair. The problem is most likely the fuel gauge sending unit which is located in the fuel tank and is mounted just above the fuel pump. It is probably sticking at the level that it was at for so long. It can be replaced by raising the rear of the car and accessing the fuel pump and sending unit from under the car behind the rear axle. Disconnect the two fuel lines and unplug the wire harness and remove the lockring with a hammer and screwdriver. Lift and turn the fuel pump assembly out for inspection and/or replacement . THE FUEL TANK DOES NOT HAVE TO BE REMOVED. I have done this many times.

the enginr oil pressure switch runs the fuel pump till the oil pressure is up to the normal operating range. When the pressure is up the relay kicks in and takes over the power to the pump. The oil pressure switch my be at fault if you can no hear the pump running when you turn the key on
