It's very likely that you burnt out the fuel pump. The fuel pump needs gas running through it to keep it cool. If there was no gas and it's pumping air they tend to burn out very easily.

Thanks for the input, but I think the fuel pump is ok. I can hear the fuel pump running when the engine is cranking over and trying to start. The fuel pump does not come on and presssureize the system when the key is in the on position and it used to .

SOURCE: 1995 AUDI 90 CS - Hard to start... spark & fuel OK

Have you tried replacing the starter? I know starters can go bad if the car is not started or run for a long time.

I am getting the same car, with the same issue.. it sat for 2 yrs and won't start.

My mechanic told me it is probably a starter.

SOURCE: 2001 audi a4 1.8 random misfire

Have you changed the coils at each misfing cylinder? I had a misfire on cylinder 3, running really rough with flashing check engine light when engine was warm. The Check Engine light did come on solid after the misfire cleared. Swapped the coil with another cylinder and the misfire code followed the coil, so I replaced the suspect coil with a known good one. Voila, problem solved. My vehicle is a 2001 Jetta 1.8t, and from what I've read on the internet, failing coils is a very common problem. Good luck.

Check the fuel filter, you may have clogged it when you filled the tank.

My 2001 chevy malibu had been working fine up until this afternoon it turns but wont start, itmakes ahumming noise even when i turnoff key.

That humming noise may be your fuel pump burning out. Try turning the key to the on position while someone else listens near the gas tank. The humming should only hum for a few seconds so you won't have time to listen yourself unless you can hear it from inside. If the hum continues and doesnt shut off, it is likely a bad fuel pump. It is normal to hear a small hum for a couple of seconds , but when it starts getting weak, it will hum louder, longer, or not at all

I have a 2001 Buick Century I have ran out of gas for the first time how do I get it back started

The fuel pump is submerged in gas in the tank. The liquid gas keeps it from overheating. If the fuel pump was run in an almost dry tank and is the original pump, it may have gone bad. On many cars you can hear the pump run for a few seconds when the key is placed in the start position without starting the engine.

I ran out of gas then i put gas in the car .now it want start .1996 camaro v6 3800 rs

You may have to "cycle" the ignition switch a few times to get fuel up to the fuel rails. Make sure the battery is fully charged. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position (do not start yet). Listen to see if you can hear the fuel pump running. If you can hear it, turn the key of and wait about 15 seconds and turn the key to the RUN position again. Repeat this step one more time, the turn the ignition to START.

If you cannot hear the fuel pump running when you turn the key on, then you most likely lost your fuel pump when you ran out of gas. This is pretty common - especially if the fuel pump has a lot of miles on it. If this is the case, then you will have to replace your fuel pump.

Wont start after it ran out of gas after I filled it with gas

Cycle the key several times to the run position and then back to the off position to try to bleed the air out it. Let it sit for about 30 seconds between cycles. How much fuel did you put in the tank. I would say that you need to put at least 2 gallons in it. You may need to change your fuel filter. When you ran it our of fuel you clould have picked up crud off the bottom of the tank and plugged the filter. You mave have damaged the fuel pump. Remove your gas cap and have a helper turn the key to the run position not start position. You should hear your pump buzzing. If you don't hear it I would suspect that something is wrong.

I have a 1999 ford contour after I ran out of gas, I added 2 gal of gas and it won't start"

It is possible that when you ran out of gas air got into the fuel lines. What you will need to do is turn the key into the run position(not into the start position) and leave it for 30 - 60 seconds. This should engage the fuel pump and allow it to pressurize the system. After letting it sit try and start the engine letting it crank for 5 - 10 seconds at a time. You may need to repeat the process a few times. It is also possible that when you ran out of fuel you damaged the fuel pump and it may need replacing. When you put the key into run see if you can hear the fuel pump running. I hope this helps you out.

Ran out of gas, now wont start

if it was out of gas completely, after filling with at least 5 gal, turn key on, without starting. You will hear pump come on. After pump stops, turn key off. Repeat this procedure three times an the engine should start after the third time.

Let me know,

Have someone turn the key on (engine off) pull gas cap and listen at the fuel tank filler tube for a humming sound for a few seconds fuel pump running,If you don't hear a humming noise check fuel pump fuses,if you hear pump running it is a good possibilty that the pump impeller broke from running dry and you will have to replace fuel pump.

2001 cavalier died while driving, now it wont start

Could be failed fuel pump. Disconnect fuel line at engine and turn over a couple times having something to catch gas in. If electric pump don't turn over engine, just turn key to run position for a few seconds. Maybe clogged fuel filter or faulty pump if no gas shows. Change fuel filter and try again. If none, change pump.

99 gmc wont start

check electric fuel pump operation ( located in the fuel tank ). Occasionally a fuel pump will burn out when running out of fuel, due to the fact the pump runs DRY for about 30 seconds till the fuel stops flowing out of the injectors, the engine quits, simultainously losing oil pressure which FINALLY shuts off the fuel pump. Sometimes TOO LATE. Hope this helps
