1 Answer

My mazda protege wouldnt start changed my timing belt and made sure to keep it in time while i was setting everyhting back up. now it only starts when i pump the gas pedal or leave it pressed but a bunch of white smoke comes out from under the hood and as soon as i let go of the gas pedal it shuts off. Also every time i turn it un it seems less smoke comes out.

You may have the timing in place but it depends on the adjustment on the timing belt there are markings that have to be set for new belt and old belt. if these are out then the engine will not start. white smoke can be caused as you have flooded the engine.or there is warter in the exhaust system.

If the engine is flodded it wouldnt start unless i pressed down on the gas pedal? Also if the belt was out of time would the car start at all?

yeah it can start. but the timing would be out and not run on idle re check the timing you time up then turn engine by hand (spark plugs out) one full turn, then check alignment re adjust then do it again, keep doing this until all the making line up

SOURCE: engine bogs and stalls

Check the air filter hose. My '99 Protege was idling rough and would sometimes shut off. The air filter hose was cracked half way around. I replaced it (easy just loosen two hose clamps and pull out the sensor) and the car is running fine.

If it's carbureted, you have an idle speed screw that can be adjusted. Here's a picture.

SOURCE: code po705 mazda protege lx shaking rough start

The Code you refer to is P0705 Transmission Range Sensor Circuit malfunction (PRNDL Input). It is a possiblility that because this code is present, this sensor is malfunctioning. If it is malfunctioning, that means the engine needs to "guess" the value that this sensor is responsible for. In most cases when this happens, the engine will go for a value that ensures the car runs. The engine will not try to run smooth or efficently, it will only try to run. It is my guess that if you have the sensor checked and replaced, the problem might be fixed. Please let me know if this answers your question and please rate my response. Thank you

It's possibly for the timing to be off even if you line up the marks. If it have variable timing the the marks only are a reference. You need special tools to properly set up timing

What happens if car doesn't start after changing timing belt with a mazda protege 1999

If you did not have the bent valves replace then that may be the problem. If the belt has not broken then turning the engine over with the belt removed will bend valves. I suggest that you have a compression test done to eliminate the valve problem. Next is to recheck the cam shaft timing . next is to check the position and firing order of the distributor.

could be you did not get the timing marks lined up perfectly.
You will nee to verify that before doing anything else. (presume you reconnected all the electrical wiring correctly.)

Timing belt on 1996 mazda protege slips during startup

Hello, this to me sounds like your fan belt slipping (not timing belt). To adjust the fan belt you need to undo your bolt on the alternator, pull it tight onto the fan belt and while holding it tight do the bolt back up tightly. this will stop yoour fan belt from slipping. I hope this helps.

2002 Mazda Protege timing belt replaced and

Scan PCM for codes. Check that timing is correct again. These DOHC engines are easy to install a tooth out. Start from the top of engine when installing timing belt on this type of engine it's the easiest way to do it. If you took CRANKSHAFT pulley apart make sure the pick up ring behind isn't placed in backwards.

Timing Belt replacement- two recomendations by mazda manual

they are good for well over 100k. If your engine is freewheeling (that is - if belt does break, no valve will hit the psiton), I would just keep driving it until it breaks or never does.
I am driving my 93 Villager until it breaks. over 150k right now, freewheeling engine.

As for cost, about $400 is my guess.

Ask your dealer service dept if it's freewheeling. check your owner manual too.
