Question about Chevrolet Astro
First important thing is making sure your vehicle does not receive damage. I would suggest, if this vehicle must be driven often and you cannot get the fluid that you seek out purified, fully distilled water. Not just common drinking water, but if this is all you can get, as long as it is truly distilled, this is the least likely to corrode or hurt your components.
Dexcool is an oil-based coolant. Regular Green' is water-based. This is what causes the "gumming" up horror stories.
You can however use some of the "alternatives" try locating it under its different name, Valvoline's Zerex G-05, which is essentially Dexcool.
*** My personal suggestion due to experience:
I have used Prestone/50/50 Extended Life Antifreeze and Coolant in a 1997 GMC Jimmy which had Dexcool in it, and have had no issues. If getting the AF-2000 or the non-50-50, try to use distilled water. The 50/50 is a straight pour in, and as mentioned will not hurt your engine. AF-2100. Both 2000 and 2100 are guarantied safe in Dexcool Coolant System Vehicles.
After that I suggest attempting to reach a Vauxhall dealer, if you have any near you, they would be able to suggest the alternative that they use, which is as I hear close to Dexcool. Remember that Oil-Based Coolant part, as it may be helpful in dealing with the service department.
At the very worst, you can use anything, but use must get a complete coolant drain first though, which would require an actual detergent flush. Most garages will not perform this, but dealers will. I realize the cost of bringing a matching make vehicle, never mind a non-make, to a dealer.
I hope this information was helpful. Please let us know if have any further questions or concerns. If this information was helpful, please take a moment to rate the solution. Thank you for choosing FixYa!
