My front right end gets bumpy between 50-70mph. Also there's a grinding noise under the cab and is is bad when I let off the gas in 5th gear and start slowing down

year/make/model??? 2x4? 4X4?? You may have more than one problem. The bumpy problem sounds like a wheel balance issue. The grinding could be anything with limited info given

4x4 troubleshooting

put the vehicle on a lift and have the mechanic observe the entire driveline while its running on the lift with the tires turning..this takes 2 people.. the shafts..and each wheel..look for anything loose or banging..its usually the front end that makes a lot of noise..it may also be in the transfer case..normally caused by different gear ratios in each axle..they must match front to rear..

Grinding noise in the front end of truck then a clunk when first driving away

If this is a 4x4, could be the IWE getting vacuum built up so the IWE pulls out.

If you do have a 4x4, might want to check the vacuum lines to the IWE ( there are 2, the other is a vent tube that is routed up into the engine compartment and is not plugged into anything ).

The grinding is the IWE partially pulled out, and the teeth on the IWE gears are slipping over each other. There is a TSB on the IWE solenoid, that water can be ingested into the system, and cause problems with the vacuum operation of the IWE.

Right click save as :
http://my.voyager.net/~sscully/file_tsb06_08_15.pdf

If this is your issue, might want to disconnect the vacuum line from the IWE and plug both ends until you check the lines or replace the IWE solenoid so you do not round the IWE gears smooth ( and the 4x4 does not engage the front axle anymore ).

All a SWAG at the moment without knowing for sure if your truck is a 4x4.

2005 dodge ram 2500 4x4....getting an intermittent grinding noise while driving in the front of truck..possible front differential..;....chrisdawe@comcast.net

Hi,
your description is a little generic, however, that is what we shall work on.
Is the grinding apparent whether the 4X4 is engaged or just in 4X2 mode? On left lock or right lock?

Best thing would be to put the front end on axle stands and start checking. Check the front wheel station on each side by trying to rock it top and bottom. Rotate each wheel and check for noise. When doing this check, listen for any noise emanating from the actual drive shafts to the hubs.

Drain the front differential and check the drained oil for metal shavings etc. To be honest, "grinding" noises usually are accompanied by damaged parts. It's just a question of checking each item in turn. Also check the front prop / Drive shaft for UJ's that are dry and thus will make noise. Also include the sliding spline in your check, again, if it's dry it will be noisy, and it could be intermittent.

4X4's need to have the front ends greased on a regular and generous basis.
You did not mention if you had hublocks fitted, which would be another check to carry out.

Good luck.

I have a 2005 ford explorer suv, is making a big noise in the front end. I can not move the car anywhere. It all started when I tried to use the 4 x 4 the other day. I have changed both axles (left and...

sound like the hubs may be bad and not completly disengaging or engaging, this will give you a loud clucking grinding type noise,i would remove the hubs and see if they are working good, or put selector into 2wd and jack the front of the truck off the ground and spin the wheel to see if the axle moves, this is so common, a think this year has the vaccum control hub too, the hubs are common, you will need to make sure the vaccum lines are connected and clear of dirt, this sound you speak of i know it sounds like it grinding metal, theres also a module that goes bad but you will need to start with the hubs.

Clicking under the front end

Clicking noises on turns indicate excess clearance in the Constant Velocity ("CV") joints. They can make noise when worn. Replace the drive axles.
