Question about 1984 Honda Civic

Valve Adjustments on Honda Civic 1984 1.5

Manual says adjust Intake and auxillary to .18-.23 mm
exhaust to .23-.28 .
the car as 12 valves. 2 on the Intake and 2 on the Exhaust side. I'm assuming the smaller of the Exhaust valve is the Auxillary Valve. So I set the Camshaft to number 1 TDC and adjusted the Intake Valves to the specs and then the Exhaust. Seemed fine. Then turned the camshaft 180 degrees anticlockwise until the number 3 piston was on TDC. I then adjusted the Intake and when I tried to adjust the Exhaust valve, I was ubable to get a clearance, instead the more I tried to release the adjusting screw the more the valve spring started to rise until the screw came off. So I am unable to get any adjustment.

if it sounds like it is trying to start you possibly have the firing order off. if that is not the case I would recheck the timing of belt to make sure you dont have one tooth off. stuff like that is so aggrivating, but if you have fuel and fire all you are missing is compression,if firing order isnt off, valves not being completely closed whent they need to be. due to improper timing.

You did not mention what engine you have, but on the vtech engines, the valve noise is usually a result of a worn camshaft and lifters. No adjustment will make it any better.

The 24-valve overhead system is a "low-maintenance"
design. Routine adjustments are no longer
necessary, however, measurement should still take
place when trouble-shooting performance problems,
or upon completion of a repair that includes removal
and installation of the valve train components or
injectors.
(1) Disconnect battery negative cables.
(2) Remove cylinder head cover (Refer to 9 -
ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/CYLINDER HEAD
COVER(S) - REMOVAL).
(3) Using the crankshaft barring tool #7471-B,
rotate crankshaft to align damper TDC mark to
12:00 o'clock position.
(a) If both number one cylinder rocker levers are
loose, continue to next step.
(b) If both number one clylinder rocker levers
are not loose, rotate crankshaft 360 degrees.
(4) With the engine in this position, valve lash can
be measured at the following rocker arms: INTAKE
1-2-4 / EXHAUST 1-3-5. Measure the valve lash by
inserting a feeler gauge between the rocker arm
socket and crosshead (Fig. 32). Refer to VALVE
LASH LIMIT CHART for the correct specifications. If
the measurement falls within the limits, adjustment/
resetting is not necessary. If measurement
finds the lash outside of the limits, adjustment/resetting
is required.

0.152 mm ( 0.006 in.)
MIN.
0.381 mm (0.015 in.)

note:
If measured valve lash falls within these
specifications, no adjustment/reset is necessary.
Engine operation within these ranges has no adverse
affect on performance, emissions, fuel economy or
level of engine noise.
(5) If adjustment/resetting is required, loosen the
lock nut on rocker arms and turn the adjusting screw
until the desired lash is obtained:
² INTAKE 0.254 mm (0.010 in.)
² EXHAUST 0.508 mm (0.020 in.) Tighten the
lock nut to 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) and re-check the valve
lash.
(6) Using the crankshaft barring tool, rotate the
crankshaft one revolution (360°) to align the
damper TDC mark to the 12 o'clock position.
(7) With the engine in this position, valve lash can
be measured at the remaining rocker arms: INTAKE
3-5-6 / EXHAUST 2-4-6. Use the same method as
above for determining whether adjustment is necessary,
and adjust those that are found to be outside of
the limits.
(8) Install the cylinder head cover (Refer to 9 -
ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/CYLINDER HEAD
COVER(S) - INSTALLATION).
(9) Connect the battery negative cables.

Valve settings


- Pull the hand brake and put transmission in neutral.
- Remove spark plug cords.
- Remove the spark plugs.
- Remove the Tappet cover
- Lift up the left front wheel.
Cylinder number 1 is toward the pulleys and belts side.
- Rotate the crankshaft anticlockwise with socket and extension rod and bring the valve tappets (intake and exhaust) No. 4 cylinder on dancing position.
NOTE: THERE ARE OTHER WAYS ALSO TO ADJUST THE FOUR VALVES AT A TIME. BUT AS DIY FOLLOW THE FOLLOWING METHOD TO AVOID ANY CONFUSION.
- Adjust the valve clearance of number 1 cylinder.
Valve clearance:
Intake 0.18 - 0.22 (cold) Exhaust 0.25 - 0.28 (cold)
- Rotate the crankshaft anticlockwise to bring the valves of cylinder 2 on dancing position and adjust the valves of No. 3 cylinder.
- Similarly rotate the crankshaft to bring the valves of No. 1 cylinder on dancing position and adjust the valves of No. 4.
- Rotate the crankshaft anticlockwise to bring the valves of cylinder No. 3 on dancing position and adjust the valve clearance of No. 2 cylinder.

make the engine runs for about 30minutes before adjusting the valves,
valve clearances:
intake valve = 0.20mm(0.008 in)
exhaust valve = 0.25mm(0.010 in)
for reference only when the engine is cold,
valve clearances:
intake valve = 0.25mm(0.010 in)
exhaust valve = 0.30mm(0.012 in)
engine specs: mitsubishi 4g13 1.3L (if you have same engine)

Wat is valve clearance on ford ranger 2002


If you have a 2.3L engine the tappet to valve clearances are:

Intake = 0.22 - 0.28 mm (0.008 - 0.011 in)
Exhaust = 0.27 - 0.33 mm (0.010 - 0.013 in)

If you have either the 3.0L or 4.0L, there are no adjustments because they use hydraulic lifters.
