Question about 1996 Volkswagen Cabrio

1 Answer

Will start but not turn over

Just bought a 1996 Cabrio 3 months ago. Started out with sometime when you turned the key nothing would happen, then turn the key over and it would start. Then it would stall while driving, but started right back up. Then it would stall and not start right away - couple of hours to a couple of days. Then it would not start at all, it will start but not turn over and there is spark and fuel. Changed the fuel filter, ignition, ignition switch, ignition sensor, ECU, crank shaft position sensor, spark plugs, and a fortune more in the electrical part. Checked and ok fuel pump, battery, distributor, removed anti theft. What is wrong with the car? Is there a wiring harness diagram as they want to check to make sure it is wired properly as they are at a loss on what is wrong and I'm broke now. Can you pls tell me what is wrong?

Big cluster of grounds on driver side right in front of door next to fuse box on wall. it may be wet here too since it is a cabrio. My jetta has a sunroof, the drain tube was loose and in this area, I knocked one of these grounds loose reattaching the drain tube and didnt notice what I had done. Tried to start car nd it wouldnt crank at all. was fn around for like 45 minutes and found if I held the driver side window buttom when I crancke the key to start it would crank and run untill I let go of the window button ,weird. Any way check those grounds I bet the are corroded

1996 chevy 3500 7.4 vortec. the ecm fuse blows at the turn of a key

One of the power wire going from your ecm to a sensor or solenoid is shorting to ground. Get a wiring diagram and an ohm meter. disconnect the battery and start checking each wire measuring from the wire to ground. as you wiggle you will see the meter show 0 ohms when it is shorted. These are the hardest and most time consuming kind of electrical problems .good luck

Check and clean the terminals then boost the car to start it after it starts. Well it's running take off the positive terminal if the car stops running the alternator is no good and you have to replace it.

if an ignition switch fails, sometimes you can jiggle the key and it will start right up. its very hard to tell. but if you can start it by bypassing the ignition switch, then its the switch itself. go to this site for more detailed info--- aa1car.com/library/1999/cm119948.htm---this page should help. click on top link.

The way to approach this sreies of issues is to first remove the remote start/alarm from the equation and restore the vans electrical system back to original. From there, if it persists, we can do more trouble shooting. Let me know and I can walk you through the process. This is definately a problem that does require a diagnostician. Thank you for the level of detail you provided!

2000 Town and Country Intermittent Start.

I don't have a solution, but my 2000 town and country does the same thing. I just bought it a month ago and it started about a week after I bought it. I took it to my mechanic and he said the starter post were dirty and cleaned them, said that should fix it. Needless to say it's still doing it. I would love to know the reason as well. Anyone have any suggestions.

Turn the key but nothing happens all electrics

Not all replacement parts are good. I would guess that the new ignition switch is bad. Its also possible that the wiring harness is loose where its connected to the ignition switch. You could try jiggling the wires.

Will not start

Check all of the battery terminals and cables and check the wires on the starter/selonoid, start from the battery and follow the cable out and check all conections , clean and tighten them and if it still does it the starter/selonoid is bad and needs replacement...

thanks
