Question about 2004 Subaru Forester

Slipping tranny when cold

I have a 2004 subaru with 340,000 kilometres. The transmission is slipping - mostly when it's cold, although it does at times when accelerating from a stop. Is it toast do you think or could it be low fluid - I didn't get home until dark tonight and I will be leaving before sun up tomorrow = work is crazy right now. I can check it on break in the morning. If it needs tran fluid - what type should i get. thanks

You owners manual will tell you what kind of fluid.
If the fluid smell burned, you have slipping bands.
time for a rebuild

Where do you check the tranny fluid on a 1984 subaru gl standard transmission. What fluid do you put in, and do you check it while its hot or cold?

The standard manual transmission??? There should be a bolt/plug on the side of the transmission to check the fluid level.

sounds like the transmission is slipping-check to make sure your tranny fluid is at the correct level and if it is check with your dealer as they may be able to do a tranny service & adjust the bands.

Hello experts, I have 2004 Subaru Forester XT with 130K. I did a transmission flush at about 90K. The transmission shifts hard form 1st to 2nd at low speed, and there is slight jolt on faster...

No, and add some Trans X slip stop and leak stop, sold by K and W. about 16 ounces, this really helped my Forester, as a lot of them have this issue with the clutch pack in the tranny. sold at most auto parts stores and Wal Mart. take care.

How long before a transmission is hot enough to slip

It should not be a matter of how hot, but when. If it only happens when the car is hot then I would check the level. While checking the level, I would see if there is any blackish stuff in the fluid. If there is then I would have your tranny rebuilt because the clutch material is breaking down and could be the cause of the slipage.

get it into the shop (transmission shop - not the dealer) ASAP!   We just had one of the clutches go in ours - it burnt through the tranny fluid in less then a month.  This with 125k (kilometres) on the odometer...
