There must be a positive way of testing the speedo device so no doubt exists.

Speed sensor is cheaper to change than cluster.

Sensor sends to ecm... and then relayed to speedo.

1984 300d speedometer stop working

these vehicles have a sensor at the transmission that has a small "o"ring seal to prevent oil getting into the unit
it fails on a regular basis and the oil affects the signal being generated for the speedo head
try replacing that sender unit

My 1999 GMC Sierra 1500 has an intermittent gearshift indicator light on or black problem. We have checked and cleaned the ground points. Also, the gas gauge is inconsistent...even when the tanked is...

It would be nice to get a little more detail on the intermittent light - you say "intermittent gearshift indicator light on or black problem" - Would it be ok if you elaborate a little more? Thanks.

As for your fuel gauge - you will be needing a new sender unit. Someone liked to keep the tank full all the time, so the wiper that moves across carbon strips wore them out just on that part. Thats why when your fuel quantity goes down, the wiper moves down to a good part of the sender board.

Ford is real proud of that sender unit - $140.

You can buy one on eBay for about $80 shipped to your door --

Which side ofintake manifold does temperature gauge sending unit go on

Water Temperature Indicator Sender Unit
The water temperature indicator sender unit is installed on the engine into an engine coolant passage. The water temperature indicator sender unit reacts to the engine coolant temperature. Its resistance decreases as the engine coolant temperature increases.

Water Temperature Indicator Sender Unit Removal
swb~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Do not mix Standard (green) Coolant with Extended Life Coolant (orange). If mixing occurs, drain engine cooling system and refill with originally equipped coolant type. If this contamination occurs the service change interval on Extended Life Coolant will be reduced from 6 years/150,000 miles to 3 years/30,000 miles.
  1. Partially drain engine cooling system as described.
  1. Disconnect engine control sensor wiring (12A581) from water temperature indicator sender unit (10884) .
  1. Remove water temperature indicator sender unit.

I have a 2004 Chev Impala and the temp guage went way past any numbers and wasn't hot. The speedo also stayed at 30 mph went the car is stopped. The speedo started working again when I shut it off and...

if you remove wire connection from temp sender unit and guage goes down then reconnect it goes up ? it is probably the temp sender unit is fault this is if you are certain engine/coolant system is ok and no indication of o/heating ?

Spedometer not working

It could be the sender unit from the transmission.
Or it could be that the head unit (the speedo its self) has a problem.

Change the sender unit first.
