You should check the level of the transmission oil first, but you probably need to have the transmission rebuilt. These were very problematic item on the MPV. They had other problems as well. I recently bought a complete MPV van with blown headgaskets and a rebuilt transmission for $200. The owner just had enough of it. I pulled the trans, which is very expensive to rebuild, and squished the rest of the van. Have a look on craigslist for dead MPV's with a good transmission and have a shop do the swap. Otherwise, probably not worth repairing.

When it does start going if the RPMs are raising but will not shift then most likely the transmission is slipping and needs to be rebuilt. If one or more shift solenoids are stuck/not working than it will only stay in one gear and will not shift. Most likely you are looking at a new or rebuilt transmission.

If it won't shift from park my first question would be how do you get it Into neutral? Sounds like you may have a gear selector sensor issue .

2001 mazda mpv won't shift into gear. After I jiggle the gear shifter around for a minute or two I'm able to get it into gear but I know something has to be fixed. The little box that outlines the gear...

The easiest thing to check first is the related fuse. If it is burnt, the box around the D of drive on the display will not show up and the gear will not shift.

Transmission kicks shifting to second gear

This is a known issue with certain '03 and '04 MPV transmissions; my 2003 had the same problem. There is a Mazda technical service bulletin about this - 05-003/004 (Shift Shock). You need to take the van to a qualified shop and have them flash the transmission control module (TCM) with new firmware.

I had this done. It did not completely fix the problem but it did reduce its occurrence.

Auto transmission will not engage in DRIVE gear when starting.

IT IS THE STRAINER INSIDE THE PAN IN THE TRANSMISSION,WHEN ITS COOL THE FLUID IS TO THICK TO TRAVEL AND GRITTY TO GO THROUGH THE STRAINER SCREEN,BUT WHEN THE TRANNY WARMS THE FLUID ITS THEN ABLE TO FLOW THROUGH THE SCREEN AND SHIFT PROPERLY.
