First remove the distributor cap and detach the green wire to the coil. There is a 13 mm nut that holds the clamp to the engine case behind the distributor. Remove it and pull the entire distributor out of the case. Do not drop dirt in... Change the "O" ring and reassemble in the reverse order. The "O'' ring is a VW part and not any "O" ring will work.

'62 1600cc VW ...Nbr 1/2 cylinders are not firing but get spark. generator appears to be dead. What might the problem be?

The 1600cc Motors were prone to developing cracks in the heads between the inlet and exhaust valve ports, causing total loss of compression.
Removal of the heads will reveal how bad. See a repairer who specialises in VWs.
Generator problem could be worn brushes or a faulty regulator.

How to replace the generatos on a 1974 super beetle

to replace the dynamo on any air cooled vw, you must remove the cooling shroud. the dynamo also turns the cooling fan which is housed in the shroud itself. if this is your first experience with aircooled vw then your BEST bet is to go to your local bookstore and locate "how to keep your volkswagen alive, a guide for the complete idiot". it is an invaluable source of info for some who may or may not be mechanically inclined. ive been doing this for over 20 yrs and i still have my first one.

Imagine that the head bolts are numbered from left to right.  Go 2-3-1-4 and set the wrench to 23 ft/pounds.
