Fuel gauge quit working

1999 chevy malibu fuel guage quit working. when i turn the key on, the gauge goes to full, going through the instrument cluster check, but then goes to empty and the low fuel light comes on.

- check the ground wires where, the gauge or the sending unit on the tank?

-   I fill up and the needle for the fuel gauge goes full then to zero.

I went to a repair shop and they said it was the float in the fuel tank so I simply drive with zero gage now.-   Guest
