HUGE OIL consumption! My check engine light came! Loud rattling!

HUGE OIL consumption! My check engine light came on and was blinking while my car was driving horribly. Had to pull over. Went to autozone and 6 misfires appeared. Took it to a cadillac dealer for them to tell me that it was 3 qts low on oil and they do not see a problem. It had only been 2000 miles since my last oil change. I bought this 2 months ago and has cost me $2000 already BEFORE this problem. This dealership has had my car 4 times in the last month and a half. I told them to do a full diagnostic and I would pay, and to just FIX! Well they said my cost for the diagnostic and simple oil change would be $150.. 3 Weeks go by and my engine light goes on AGAIN! I put 3 quarts of oil in. A week later I put 2. Today a put another. Took it in and they said they still could not find a problem. I park my car on concrete, there is no indication of leak. No colored fumes from exhaust. Rattly sound when accelarating. Had to get a new air bag sensor 5 hundred dollars. Front tie rods bad. Rear axle replaced but that was a recall. Speakers blew very quick and didn't even have it that loud. Can't believe there isn't a used lemon law. Worst car I've ever owed. I want my Saturn Vue back! I'm trading this in and taking my losses! Anyone know what else this oil problem could be? I see there could be a warped thread for the oil filter, but dealership should have seen this. I know some people go through a qt for 2-3k miles but mine is consuming double. I don't know what to do.

Same type of problem. Uses 1 qt. per 1000 miles. 30k miles on engine and still under warranty. How should we approach the dealer about fixing this problem? If this is an internal engine problem, should we request the engine to be replaced?

LOOK UP LEMON LAWS FOR YOUR STATE.  You should NOT have to pay to fix ANY of that within the first couple of months. Afraid this answer is too late for you, but maybe will help others!

The gasket is probalby leaking. I have a 2003 version of this car and the gasket on the manifold was leaking but I never had issues with oil leaking.

Sounds like an oil seal or manifold gasket. If you don't see oil in your driveway, the oil is burning off in the engine and this would cause the misfire if it's getting to the sparkplugs. Take a flashlight and look under the hood for any small pools of oil near the sparkplugs. I'd go to a different dealership for service and I'm willing to bet they'll confirm an oil seal or gasket problem. Best of luck with your problem.

Hi I have a 2010 chevy traverse , it makes a loud rattling noise when first started in the morning and the check engine lite is on

Check engine light on - did you have it checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes ? Do you have it's oil changed on time . Loud rattling noise could be caused by the VVT - In internal combustion engines, variable valve timing (VVT) is the process of altering the timing of a valve lift event, and is often used to improve performance, fuel economy or emissions. It is increasingly being used in combination with variable valve lift systems.
Your best bet ,take it to a qualified repair shop .

My engine is very loud and has a rattle

Jennifer - Mini's of this age have a know issue with the timing chain, that can cause that sound. Instead of having a company wide "recall" to bring back all the mini's, the company instead has "open campaigns" in which they fix the issue when the cars come in for other maintenance. Other things that could be wrong is that the engine is very low on oil. If you are close to a mini dealership, I recommend trying to get an appointment there. If not, have it checked out by a mechanic who is used to working with european cars / mini's.

Bad oil pump

If the engine is not making loud valve train sounds or rod knocking sounds, consider changing the oil pressure sender.

About 2 weeks ago we filled up oil and then last weekend checked the oil was dry as a bone there are no oil leaks at all the car doesn't run hot no engine lights on it just sounds really loud rattling and...

Oil loss like that can only go one of 3 places, down the exhaust pipe, into the water jacket (unlikely), or out of the engine in a big puddle under the car. As you have guessed, the rattling and ticking noise is oil starvation, not a good thing.

If you are sure it is not merely leaking out externally, then check the coolant for signs of engine oil. It will be obvious as a dirty oily appearance. Water in the oil will show up as a milky looking deposit on the dipstick.

After that have a compression check done to see if a piston ring or valve stem seal has collapsed, and is allowing excess oil consumption. The spark plug tip will show evidence of that, being black and oily, instead of dry and light brown.

Another possibility is that a main or big end bearing has failed, and is overloading one cylinder with oil. Again it will show up on the spark plug tip. Such a failure will also be heard as a knocking noise, which varies with engine speed.

Engine is getting too much gasoline

First, check the engine compression and make sure that you aren't suffering huge blow-by on the piston rings and/or valves as this will cause high fuel consumption and oil burning at the same time.

Engine rattle noise

Have you checked your oil? Sounds like you may have run it way low, the loud metallic noise is probably metal on metal contact inside your engine, add oil and it that fixes it, count yourself lucky, if not need to take it to a shop.

Oil consumption, rattle, engine noise

Check under the hood and inspect the valve cover gasket. If it's bad it would explain why you don't see any leaks on the ground because it's probably burning off on the manifold. This ticking you're hearing is a lack of lubrication to the rocker arms. Apart from the valve cover gasket, you should get under the car and inspect the oil pan and oil filter for seepage. Best of luck on your problem.

Fiat brava loud tappet

Depending in the mileage, sometimes the crankshaft bearings were out lowering the oil pressure. including an additive or one grade heavier oil could solve the tappets clicking. Also check the connections to the fuel injectors and the gas pressure to the injectors.
