we have to choices here.
first check the pressure on your a/c system and be sure that it's correct.
if a/c freon is low your compressor will engage and stop periodically.
second. if first step is ok then you may have a bad vacuum element.
they are located inside the dash and operate by vacuum. your a/c switch sends the air to open them or close them, if one is defective ( leak ) it may open and close allowing hot air or cold air to contaminate the system. " this is a very hard job to do "
so if first step fixes it then that's awesome if not let me know and i can look it up for you ( the steo 2 )
hope this helps

SOURCE: 2004 ford explorer heating
Check the heater control valve, when u switch to heating mode, this valve is supposed to open, allowing hot engine coolant into the heater core under the dash, it is not opening the valve, the clicking is the sound from it attempting to open the valve.

i just fixed this problem - the switch is bad - take out the seat - 4 bolts on the bottom 4 corners and then remove the whole switch - either buy a new one around $200 or unsauter the switch and clean it but be careful as there are a lot of parts inside that can fall out. i cleaned mine and it works fine beats spending the money.

Hello, The problem with the A/C controls and center console functions lies in the power circuit of the stereo unit. The solution for this is to replace the head unit via the dealership (very expensive) OR rebuild/repair your original unit. Unfortunately this is not a fix you can do at home - it does require electronic bench work.
Please feel free to contact me for more information. Our company does offer this repair service nationwide. I'm sure we can save you both time and money.

the a/c system may be low on a charge. have a a/c shop ck it. if its low, have them ck for a leak. if unable to locate a leak, they may need to rechagre it, and add a UV dye and you may have to bring it back several weeks later.
