Vauxhall vectra 1900 dti 150 auto starts and drives well then after a mile or so chucks a bit of black smoke and goes into limp mode however not fully and the engine light doesnt come on , ease off a bit and put your foot down again she picks up smookes a bit still but keeps on doing this . any ideas

Try replacing the fuel filter, also add a fuel injector cleaner to your gas tank. If not have a shop clean out your trottle body.

try lifting the brake pedal with your toes then switching on the cc when driving. sometimes a faulty or loose switch on the brake pedal can cause cc to cut out.

one of 3 things.

1 get all the air pipes checked make sure none have perished are sucking in to much air, check the undersides and all the seals for the air system.

Secondly the air mass sensor, this controls the amount of air to mix with fuel if faulty they go crazy either not sending enough air or to much. you can clean these with carb cleaner and they sometimes work again.

Lastly and most likely the fault is the EGR valve this is the Exaust Gas Recycler Valve, basically it forces unburnt fuel back into the engine to reburn, work like a little turbo kind off. when they go you loses loads of power almost to the point where the car is not drivable, again you can clean them up and sometimes will work.

these are the things you should get checked first.
