Question about 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Hand break light illuminated on dash

What would cause this to happen. The fluid level and float in the resevoir are OK. The rear brakes are not dragging so they are not hung up. What else can I look for?

If your braking system is ok and its only the handbrake warning light that is on then it sounds like a stuck switch not sure were it is on your car but it should be near to the bottom of the hand brake it is a type of push switch i.e. handbrake in the on position switch will come out relase the handbrake and it will push the switch back in.

hope this helps

For some reason these vehicles you need to bleed brakes several times, had same problem, so air hangs up in lines somewhere it apears. When you say brakes sticks, describe it better, locked up, or dragging on rotors?

Why is brake fluid warning light on but there is brake fluid

From Fiat LOW Brake Fluid / Parking Brake Either the exclamation mark symbol or the 'BRAKE' dashboard symbol may be used on various models of the Fiat 500. Light should illuminate until engine has started. If light remains on, it signifies the parking / hand brake is on, or that there is insufficient brake fluid in the reservoir. If light illuminates and the handbrake is not applied, braking may become defective. Seek assistance from a Fiat technician immediately.

Check to make sure your parking/hand brake is fully released, sometimes the spring that pushes back on the mechanism isn't strong enough, doesn't push back all the way, and the brake indication switch isn't engaged.
The other possibilities are that the float in the master brake cylinder is stuck (if it has one), or the level sensor has failed.

How do i fix or replace the break light inside my dash. It stays on even when there is nothing wrong with my breaks

Hi,
The brake light is a warning that your fluid level is low. Check the brake fluid reservoir if the fluid is in minimum level. If the level is okay and it is full, the problem would be float sensor in the reservoir.
Please check the connector of the float sensor if it is connected and try to clean the metal pins( might be full of dirt and grease ).
The float might be stuck to "low" thats why the brake light up( move the float up and down to free it ).
Hope that helps you out.
Thank you for using FixYa!

I have a 2004 4 runner that the brake light on the dash came on since i have replaced the front and rear pads and topped off brake fluid on the vehicle. The brake light is still on where is the sensor...

Any air left in the system can cause a light on. If you ran the system completly dry while bleeding your brakes, that can also cause the light to be on. There is a level sensor in the mastercylinder, when the level gets so low it will illuminate the light. lightly tap the mastercylinder resevoir and see it the light goes out. The plunger will get stuck from time to time.

Kia carnival 2003.handbrake light comes on and beeping occurs when braking slightly hard. could a leaky rear brake cylinder be cause? how can i get rid of beeping noise?

hand brake lights are tied to hand brake, compensation block and somtimes a float in brake res. so check fluid level and to answer your question , yes a leaking rear wheel cyl. will cause a light but in that case it would not take too long to empty brake res. and be out of fluid at least to rear brakes anyway.

Why does the brake light keep coming on when hit a bump

your brake light is probably coming on because the fluid is to low in the resevoir. ther is a sensor in the brake fluid resevoir that is on a float. if the fluid gets to low the sensor tells thebrake light to come on . so if the fluid is just high enough to keep the light off, everytime you hit a bump the fluid sloshes around causing the float to drop and the sensor to turn the brake light on. also when your brake fluid level is low it tells you that you will either need new brakes soon or you might have a leak.

Dash brake warning light keeps flashing. I just had brakes done, new wheel cylinders on all 4 wheels replaced.

The brake light is actuated by the float in the brake fluid resevoir. When the sensor travels down the light comes on. When the sensor travels or floats in the fluid the light goes off. Check to see that the brake fluid level is at the full line on the resevoir under thje hood. Most cars of this model use standard dot 3 fluid. Another thing that will turn on the brake light is if the parking brake is applied. Check to see if the park brake is locked in its fully released setting. Sometimes you have to pull the park brake pedal up as you pull the release lever to ensure it is up all the way. riding around with the park brake engaged will burn the rear brake shoes up in a very short time.

Toyota townace 1988 - handbrake light comes on when turning right. Whats the source of problem?

I would suspect that the power cable coming from the hand brake to the light on the dash board is lying on the steering column and over the years the insulation has chafed until it will make a circuit in a certain position. The fix is easy once you have found the worn spot. Just wrap it in insulation tape and hold it away from whatever is cauisdng it to chafe with either a cable tie or more insulation tape.

Hand brake light on dash of my 1983 FJ40 will not turn off

Hi. Look at the brake master cylinder. See if the brake fluid is low. If there is a wire and a connector on the side of the reservoir, this is the 'fluid-height sensor' when the fluid is low (as the brakes wear, the fluid level drops proportionally), the fluid level is below the sensor, and creates a circuit, thusly illuminating the light.
