I had the same problem. had excessive end play. took apart the trans. found the front oil pump bushing worn and coming out of the pump which wore the torque conv. and caused the front seal to leak. also had overrunning clutch disks and forward clutch disks all welded together. The one way clutch had broken sprags, the sun shell was extremely worn on splines as well as the face of the shell. the reverse input clutch was also shot. the 2-4 band was worn out and we had to replace the overrunning clutch piston return spring which was bent. the separator plate was worn where the balls sit. the 2-3 control solenoid had high resistance.

I'm sorry to say this, but with my experience, it doesn't look good if its leaking really badly.

I rebuilt it and it cost over $900 for parts alone. I would say that it would be worth getting a rebuilt, as it has warranty.

Will a 1997 4l60e work in a 2001

There are so many factors involved - bell housing bolt pattern, engine type, etc.
you are better to get a trans out of the same configured vehicle.

Front seal leaking in gear box

If it is the front seal in the gear box then the box has to come out. The seal is in the extension housing that the clutch throw out bearing runs on and the seal can be replaced by removing that housing . However mostly if that seal leaks then the front bearing on the clutch shaft may be failing allowing the shaft to move and that is why the seal leaks. If the front of the box is dry then the oil leak may be the rear main seal of the engine so it is best to check both arrears as the oil leaks from the same point in the bell housing

A cannot get the top center bolt out of the bell housing into the engine block on my 4l60e transmission in my 2001 chevy silverado 4x4

to remove the upper bell housing center bolts on a 4L60E (not an E if it's 4wd by the way but we'll go with that for now)
you will have to unbolt the transmission from the crossmember and drop it down which will in turn tilt your motor back and allow you better access to those two top bolts. Put your two bottom bolts back in finger tight before you drop the transmission down though or you stand the chance of breaking the bell housing when it's tilted back. you can also use a floor jack on your crank pulley on the front of the motor. Jack up on it and the motor will tip back but not if you have the transmission bolted in place still. hope this helps

What transmission will interchange with my truck a 1998 chevy 1500 with a ext cab with a 4l60e

You can replace it with another 4L60E 1998 and newer and you can upgrade it to the 4L65E which is the same but uses 5 planetary gears in stead of 4 that is used in the 4L60E.
1998 was the change off year i believe where they started to section off the transmission in to three parts. The bell housing, body and tail end. The tail shaft housing uses 5 bolts to connect to the transmission and the 1997 transmission and earlier uses 4 bolts, but internal parts had no changes other then the 4L65E.
Thank you for using fixya and good luck.

Would a gm trans model 4L60e replace a 4060e for a 1998 chevy pick-up 305 v-8 4x4 ?

It is the same transmission but the 99 has a different bolt pattern. If the 1998 has a removable bell housing(it could be either way) You will have to switch the bell housings. The bell housing on the 99 is removable. If they both have removable bells then it will work.

Need location of HIGH Gear Pressure Switch on gm transmission

Do you have a 1 piece case or does the bell housing unbolt? A 700R4 usually has 3 switches on the back of the valve body.the one closest to the 1-2 accumulator (pass. side rear corner) is the fourth switch. If you have a two piece case, you have a 4L60E,the pressure switch is still on the valve body but it is an assembly, not a single switch.

Putting together the 2.9 engine and dont know if there should be a tube that the transmission dip stick goes into

There should be a tube that comes up from the auto trans with one tab to secure it to the bell housing bolt (trans bell housing bolt goes through tab, then through the bell housing) to the engine block. Pass side.

Looking for transmisson for 1999 4+4 suburban what years will fit

The years will fit is 1998 to present 4l60E for the 1500 suburban. Your transmission on your Suburban is a 4L60E, just make sure it's a 4L60E for the years of 1998 to present. 1997 was the change year and the transmission was sectioned in to a three piece housing where the older 4L60E was a one piece housing and the older housing had a 4 bolt end on the tail housing as to the newer ones have a 5 bolt, the internals are the same through out the years. Good luck and hope this helps.
