My 2002 vw turbo beetle cut off while i was driving. /it made a loud 'wining' noise then engine shut off. car will not restart. acts like it wants to start, but engine doesn't turn over. i have power & gas, but i noticed my oil was a little low. what could this be and how hard would it be to fix?

Thanks I'll give it a try. How do I know if the bearings are good or bad? I talked to a VW shop and they said it sounds like the ignition switch... Is this a possibility as well?

Hey thanks a bunch for your help. I finally broke down & took it to a shop, and it was the timing belt. I'm just crossing my fingers that it didnt cause any further problems within the motor.

    Thanks again

This is not good; you probably ran the turbo bearings dry and they have seized try to loosen the turbo by removing it breaking it loose and lubricating the bearings if they are still good or, find another one at the junkyard

If your engine can turn over (rotate) it is not the ignition switch; look inside the turbo if the turbo fan blades are not turning or, are hard to turn then your turbo bearings are the problem If you want to check a no-start only problem: check your timing belt to see that it is turning the timing gears (broken timing belt) next hook up a timing light (light flases good ignition system) next to check: fuel let me know how it goes

well more than likely your camshaft tensioner is going bad .it has a hydrolic tensioner that keeps the chain tight and when it goes bad it ticks bad ans set a timing over or under adanced code you NEED to get it fixed because if it fails it will take out all the valves and major money . the stealership will want about 6 to 700 for the part but you can buy it from orillys for $299.00 and it comes with all the gaskets needed it cost about 4.5 hours labor to change

2002 vw beetle turbo s. the car moves out goes the speed limit as normal. when i approach the traffic light, the reat trunk lock/unlock selenoid opens/closes with out fail. I do not hear the noise when I...

I'm sure this problem was resolved LONG ago, but I just had to mention this to anyone else who might be hearing a noise like this. I drive a 2002 Turbo S and I too thought something was seriously wrong with my car day I first bought it. If your car is a Turbo it has a rear spoiler that pops out when you accelerate to about 40mph. It stays out until you stop the car, and makes a LOUD clunking noise when it disengages. The noise is not nearly as loud when you accelerate, but can be startling for those who don't expect it when the car stops. I have only driven the one Turbo with the spoiler, so I can't say whether they all make so much noise, but mine always has.

Loud noise folled by loss of power

In order to run a turbo you have to have low compression in your cylinders. when you drive to aggressively you can blow you turbo out and you car will have no power at all. A turbo pushes air into you intake in order to get that power. if it goes out your engine will run like its 30 years old and blown. get a new turbo. take care and good luck.

start by putting trans in nutral (with e brake on) than turn the key just short of turning on the ing press the brake andyou will need to grabe the shifter with the right hand and the key with the left hand now turn key just enough to move shifter slightly out of nutral right between nutral and drive it might a couple of trys but you will get it.

2002 VW Beetle turbo

Ok we figured something out. The turbo model has a rear retractable spoiler that flips up when you go above 45 mph and down when you go below 10. The later models just have a fixed spoiler. Still looking into if it should make that loud 'ratchety' sound.
