The warning light is telling you the computer found something that will affect the performance and fuel mileage. You would need to get the computer scanned for trouble codes to proceed.
You have some wiring problems shorting out that is coming from the dash board so if you or anyone you know how to use a multimeter to check the wireing harnesses plus check any connectors that might be just very touching the connector of dashboard which means a bad connection to dashboard.
on many buicks and impalas there is a problem with the wire resistors falling off the circuit board! You will see four resistors upper right if any of these has fallen off they need to be replaced, Good news is you can replace them yourself ! go to your electronic supply store and buy 151 surface resistors and replace them ! These are 50 ohm and don't get hot and fall off. use a 15 watt soldering iorn. Don't want it to hot! Repace all 4 and wala it should lifgt back up! Douglas Noack texasinstrumentcluster.com
If you give the top of the dashboard directly above the speedometer (and gauge cluster) a nice open handed whack 2or3 times, with the key in the on position and see if the cycle on. if this is the case the 6-8 wire plug behind the gauge cluster is faulty and should be replaced. if not...Open the hood of the engine and directly in front of the driver located on the firewall a big square box mostly likely with rubber over it to protect it, with a nut directly in the middle of it, if this is lose tighten it, or if tight take it off and unplug look for corrosion on pins 46-54 these pins control your speedometer and mileage. look for corrosion. Good luck
try junk yards, or internet, someone has to have one, also see if you can have it rebulit. also you might want to remove and make sure all connections to cluster are thight. good luck.
would change the ECU with the chip from the key from a car in scrapyard ,but before you get carried away try another seperate earth on the back of the speedo printed circuit board ,i wouldnt mind betting this is your problem
